Stealth Stalker
I've been offered an old English sxs 410 shotgun by a friend of my uncles, the only problem is this gun is off ticket, I think he used to have a certificate? But he let it lapse. Question is how can I get the gun? This sort of thing must arise quite frequently I would have thought? SS

silpig5
its easy really if its all cosha . get your mate or his uncle to take it to your local friendly gunshop , explain story ,in loft ect ecte ct , he puts it in regester , then not sure if its straight away or 30 days he sells it to you on ticket . if it all goes wrong you and your mate have tried everything by the book so no harm done . thats straight from the mouth of a senior norfolk feo . if its not cosha , there is the gap between you and your mate so its down to him to explain the hsbc bags under his bed ! adi
MiLisCer
It is really easy - done this very recently - went to the house with my friendly FEO - in his presence I entered the gun on my ticket - hey presto. He made a not of where and why it came about. End of story. Mike

I'd be very carful mate This happens more frequent than you think and the police are used to dealing with it.Once upon a time guns were not licenced and thats how many are still floating around off ticket in lofts, behind wardrobes,in cupboards etc.Usually a visit to an RFD with said gun and your SGC then they will enter it onto your cert. Provided the gun hasnt been used in crime and is registered to someone they dont bat an eye.

Both? Sometimes things are best left alone….Yes it might be a nice little gun but how much will you use it? I read on here all the time the amount of guns people own! You can only shoot one at a time. Not owning it won’t change you life, however it could be a right pain in the backside for all concerned. If you want a 410. go buy one from a gun shop….in and out in under ½ an hour. TEH

TEH Ignore all the above, if you want one there's no need to waste money in a shop when you have a perfectly good one available, which needs to be dealt with anyway as your uncle's friend is breaking the law by possessing it. Knowing the history you know it hasn't been used in any crime, so there's no need to speak to the police about it (if there was a chance of it being involved in crime the police should be informed, but this isn't one of those cases). Take it down to a RFD, he can put it on ticket as found and transfer it to you. This happens quite often, I know someone who was a RFD and many of his best sales came from guns off ticket that people just dumped with him. They're just added to the RFD register, which goes to the police anyway. Simple (I'm a bit jealous, I wish someone would give me a SxS .410!). Thedeerman
I was in a similar position not so long ago. I was given a gun by a relative that was not on ticket. I took it to my local RFD and he gave me a couple of options. Hand it in to him annonomously and he will hand it over to the police, of have it put on ticket. He said that either way, if it had actually been on somebodys ticket in the past, it would cause a few more problems than if it had never been on the police database. He did say that the police database was rubbish and that if the gun was not on ticket in the past 10 years, the police would probably have lost the records. If it was on your uncles friends ticket and they have a record, they may want to have a word. At the end of the day, the police want all guns to be registered, so they wont be too unhappy that you are doing the right thing! I chose to get the one I had destroyed, it was just an old thing in a manky leather case anyway. I'd never even heard of the maker, thought holland and holland was a pharmacy? TEH Quite right - Why would anyone want to rescue a pretty little London gun, especially if you already a have one, besides it probably only takes 2" cartridges, you would be much better off with a Biakal or some other modern gun. This sort of thing is happening far too often - if all these old guns were taken off the street and turned into paperweights the world would be a better place. HDAV
Thanks chaps, a mate of mine is an RFD so I'll have a word with him. best idea I was given one that had fallen off ticket, you would think the police would be glad it was back in the legit system....... It was slow and painful as they had to check with every force UK wide it was stolen etc even tho 10 years previously perhaps less it was on a ticket in the same region, original Owner emigrated leaving some stuff in storage with a friend in a barn, furniture etc and a cabinet containing a shot gun! It was handed into local RFD ant letters had to be written to say where it came from etc it is up to the person in illegal possession to hand it in, it may never have on a ticket so wasnt surrendered when the ticket was but unless there is a good reason for it coming to light now, Death, refurb of old property etc questions will and should be asked. SS The police are used to dealing with old guns found in lofts/sheds etc, and if that's the case you shouldn't have a problem. However, if the old boy did have a certificate in the past and kept the gun 'off ticket' after his certificate lapsed then I would think he might have a few questions to answer. First thing I'd do is find out if he ever had the gun on a certificate, if he has the police will have a record of it, and I reckon you'd be best to leave it well alone. rimfire4969
If it was on ticket and then it ran out the olive would of been all over him a long time ago.
RichardH
Its a five minute job to have it added to your SGC if theres a ensible explanation as to the circumstances
Scully
Have done this a couple of times, and it's as easy as previous posters have said.I took an off ticket gun to my local RFD,explained the situation and asked him to put it in his register, which he did.He then 'sold' it back to me for the princely sum of 20 quid which I gave him for his trouble. It went on my ticket as 'given' as it had never been proofed.Simples. Sounds like a very nice gun.
Harnser
I would take the gun and put it in my cabinet . I would then phone the local firearms licensing dept and tell them what I have done and that the person who owns the gun wants to gift it to me and I would like it put on my certificate . Better the gun in a licensed owners cabinet than standing against the wall in some house . I say this because a friend of mine quite recently did exactly that with a gun from similar circumstances . His FEO went round to his house checked the gun out and put it on ticket . Harnser . Edited April 21, 2012 by Harnser
