sako751sg
Held oot yesterday morning at 9.30 with the rod to try for a Sea troot.Glorious sunshine for the first time in weeks and fine to get a wee bit of heat.Hooked a Salmon, mint and around the 6-8lb and had him on for a few minutes before the hook came oot.Salmon on the fly is nay exactly my forte and they tend to play me and not the other way around.Fine to have one on for a while but gutted when he came off so held up the road to see if Mac fancied the hill for a buck or possibly even a stag.Said we would go aboot 14.00 but half an hour later the old folks phoned to see if he fancied going away up to the static in Golspie so there was a change of plan and i held away solo.Arrived there at 3ish,and after a quick chat to the farmer i drove as far as i could and only had to walk a few hundreds yards to get tucked in to some fund bushes, with the nearest part of the woods 176 yards away.Three roe were out,2 does and a buck but decided to leave him in case there were any red on the go.They busually give you a short timespan for nailing as they pretty nearly always come onto the grass just before daylight, but where i sit i can usually shoot,or easy stalk then shoot most of the 600 yard wood front. There were not many tracks viewable coming oot of the trees so i was doubting if they were using it lately,so when a fox appeared on the 176 mark i took the shot.Quite a strong wind so kept well forward to allow a wee bit but the pill went where it was aimed and the fox went straight doon. This was just after 5 and there was nothing else apart from the roe till just after 9,when it started raining so i decided to pick the fox and bin it for the night. When i picked the fox i noticed a wee trail going through the ditch into the wood and and was pretty sure the slots were red so took Rab for a walk right up the ditch and a couple of hundred yards later there was a good track through the ditch, and when i checked the mud inside the treeline right enough it was battered with big red slots. This got the heart going a wee bit so i held back up where i had sat in the hope that i hadnt spooked anything that was on the verge of coming out.We hadnt been there for 5 minutes when the sound of branches breaking in the trees put us on full alert and i thought it would be minutes before something ventured out.Even though we were nearly 200 yards away we could hear them move past us,and after 10 mins i thought they must have scented from going down earlier, but then wondered if they would keep going doon about 600yards to a sheep free bit that they sometimes used a lot,and sure enough when i glassed there were 2 hinds just newly out.Stood up for a better look, and spotted a stag run out but go round the corner and out of sight,so with the wind right we legged it down till about 400 yards away when we had to be canny as in view by now.Still on a nice bit of high ground i ranged the stag at 210 so thought if i made 50 on him i would take it,but he was moving faster than us to get to the hinds and i was just on the verge of going down and pulling when another stag jumped the fence and started after the hinds.I ranged him at just under 200 so got doon and set,and after going 20 yards or so he turned broadside and took the shot.I nice thud came back with a good jump and a wee run, then he stood at the woodside for a few seconds,so instead of risking him going into the wood i necked him and he went straight down. That was the easy bit,and the 300 yards drag very uphill to where i could get the Jeep to left me absolutely ****** but well worth the work.He was at least 10 points and hit the scales at just over 60kg.All in a cracking day but would have been better with the fush.
