Paladin
Just a fantastic post. A thought about wad material. How about the fiber board that you put under laminate flooring? Or the board that's used for Notice Boards, That you push drawing pins in? Both can be stiffened by soaking in candle wax. Your very own 'Kleena' wads. Wildfowler
Thats exactly the plan for the flooring felt, I've managed to source some today so will collect on Saturday. I'll make a wax and linseed oil mix so it isn't too stiff when it sets... Edited August 29, 2013 by Wildfowler
Wildfowler
I got various springs at the weekend to try. The best compromise between trigger pull and detonating the primer was 2 springs giving non linear compression. The step on the firing pin ensures both are kept concentric whilst the smaller spring sits nicely up against the shoulder Here are some pictures of the punch being made. This is the handle... This is turning the sharp end Here it is finished
Wildfowler
I heated it up with a large blow torch until it was cherry red and sat it in fine charcoal powder to harden it. Once it cooled down i used an oil stone to put an edge on it.
Wildfowler
I put the punch to the test... it worked perfectly! I cut a disc of hardboard out with a hole cutter drill and sanded it smooth on the linnisher, cut some cereal box card to the right size and rolled up a shot cup, sandwiching the tabs between the hardboard and the card disc... I then cut 4 slits down them so they open up properly Its not pretty but its a good fit I've started making the connectors for the cleaning rod too

Rexcernui
You need to write a book about this. It would make a fantastic read.

walt1980
Been watching this thread for a while now, think we've all dreamed of doing something like this, just watching it progress has been amazing! To actually be involved in it must be a once in a lifetime opportunity! And the workmanship put some professionals to shame in my opinion, absolutely top job! Wildfowler
I loaded all the gear onto the trailer this morning and set off to my parents...
Wildfowler
I set up the two 8x4 sheets of hardboard at 70 yards (64m) from the muzzle. I screwed a stack of news papers in the centre so I had a mark to aim for and could also test the penetration
Wildfowler
I set up the gun on 2 bales of straw and breached it with a double thickness of 18mm rope.
Wildfowler
I drove a stake in the ground so i could use it to angle the pull cord at 45 degrees to the gun so i didn't have to stand directly behind it Sighting up down the barrel

Wildfowler
This is with 6oz of shot at 70 yards. The mrs counted the hits and sprayed them with paint so we didn't double count on the second shot... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVkRIPQhX3E&feature=player_detailpage 6oz of steel shot was 566 pieces. out of that 263 were on the board so 46%, i think the pattern blew... the sulphur in the black powder started diss-colouring the brass after just one shot... Wildfowler
12oz is 1133 pieces of shot, 689 were on the board so 61%, the pattern was nice and tight... Edited August 31, 2013 by Wildfowler
