Penelope
Just a few from my collection that I know have either a punting bias or chapters. As for Hawker, other than walked up partridge, punting is pretty much all he did shooting wise. Coch y Bonddu books have a few Hawker facsimile/reprints available, one for £9.95, but average £20 - 30. Thanks Penelope looks like you have been busy ! Penelope
Another two. Dee Widfowler: The last of the professionals: Harold Gill - Leslie Brockbank (ed) Through the Lens with Stanley Duncan - Jean Skinner (compiled)
Wildfowler
The complete wildfowler by Stanley Duncan has a section on punt gunning too. As does fowler in Ireland by RPG. Both good books...

winchester79
hi fella, what a fantastic job you have made i just hope i can get mine looking just a bit like yours! i have bought an outfit the gun is fine but the punt was rotten and was only held together by the fibreglass!! so a new build is on the cards, i would like to use the plans for a 22ft7" double punt by stanley duncan but my brain cant get round how to work out the rib measurements? it states the distance at the widest point is 3ft 7" accross the bottom but i cant work out how to reduce the distance on each rib to the stern and stem??? if you could help i would be very grateful

What size gun is it?!? Have you done any punt gunning in the past? For the ribs or frames, start with the radius from 3 points section here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radius Take the overall length, minus the length of your stem and stern block, say 6" each. Then take your width, minus the width of the stem and stern blocks / 2... This will give you the 3 points... From this you can work out the radius. Once you have that you an work out any other point using trigonometry... I hope that make sense and helps Else draw it to scale and measure it! Edited to say, the above is assuming fore and aft is equal about the midpoint Edited September 12, 2013 by Wildfowler

Wildfowler
Hello Strangford Wildfowler, No, there isn't any images of the gun on the punt (not very good ones anyway). I still need to finish the gun crutch... once thats done and the gun is painted i'll get it mounted up Good luck with your studies! even if you decide not to stay in engineering, it will definitely give you a good base / grounding to work from! Wildfowler
I had a bash at splicing a loop on the end of the breaching rope the other day... Wednesday night I drilled and tapped a hole in the sides of the action to screw the side plates too I drilled 2 holes in the face of the action too This evening I screwed the wood to the action and mounted it up in the lathe
Wildfowler
This roughing out the shape. I covered the lathe in sheets to collect as much of the wood shavings as possible - it seemed to get 95% of it This once i'd given it a run over with some emery cloth

Wildfowler
I've taken them off now, i'll seal them as soon as i get a chance. Next is to finish the gun crutch and paint the gun! The wood to metal fit is very good, the Beast is looking mighty good! Thanks Tightchoke! just looking forward to getting it all out now! Grandalf
Tightchoke referred to your gun as the Beast. Does it have a name yet? Does the punt have a name for that matter? Can't possible go fowling with an un-named boat and gun. Country Gun's Roaring Emma is now as famous as he was.

Wildfowler
Lovely job great project btw do you think one screw each side of the stockis enough once it gets damp swells and such it might split off??Funny you should say that... No, i don't think it's enough! I plan to put another one each side today or tomorrow. When I was turning it you could hear it wasn't seated 100% in the middle Edited to say, I'm not 100% happy with them as there are some imperfections in the wood so I'll probably use these ones for a season and see how they go and in the meantime I'll source some more wood or cut some more of the oak I have to see what the grain is like... Pole Star
Keep it up wildfowler the pics are of very good quality & we can't wait for the book , how do you intend to finish the metal ? I think most punt guns were finished with paint correct or in correct ? . ps A chap I know has a Charles Osborne 2 bore & he told me that when he first got it the barrel was painted but when he took off the paint he found it was a damascus barrel . Wildfowler
Will it be 50 shades of grey? it will certainly be A shade of grey! I'll put some of the gelcoat on some wood so I can match the paint to it. I plan to use a 2 pack car paint which I'll spray at my parents as my dad has a small spray booth setup with all the infrared heaters, etc...
