Not true, local legend. (I've never been charged to park at Bristol Zoo). Good one though!

It might or might not be a local legend but parking at the Zoo isn't free and hasn't been for ages.

Parking

The North car park on Clifton Down is open every day the Zoo is open. The West car park on College Road is open during peak periods and an overflow car park operates on the Downs during the high season.

Day visitors: £3 per car

Members: £1 per car

Corporate, hospitality and business visitors: £3 per car

In the early 90s I used to live within a stone's throw of the zoo (I didn't by the way) and the animal noises at night were really weird. That was when they had more exotic stuff than they have now though.

Anyone remember Wendy the elephant, or the white tigers?

I'm too young to remmeer Alfred the Gorilla though... ;)

Selby used to have a tollbridge,

on market days the queue would back up half a mile or more, one day a local put a satchel over his shoulder and walked up the queue taking the coppers it cost,

when they got to the bridge and were asked to pay,..................

Yeah I do as it happens, from what I remember Wendy was a bit of a cock tease. I never warmed to her. Alfred certainly had the gift of the gab.. He still owes my uncle a score.
