Foreshore virginity lost!!!!

Evening all,

This morning i got my first ever bird on the foreshore down on the wash. It has to of been the best experience of my shooting life so far. After a confidence bashing geese flight yesterday where i missed 2 geese i decided today, my 17th flight out, was gonna be my day.

I hardly got any sleep last night thinking about what the morning may bring and when my alarm went off at 0330 i was quick to jump out of bed. A glance out the window showed a heavy mist and a steady breeze, wondering what effects the mist would have on the flight i thought, only one way to find out, foreshore here i come. Flask and gun in hand i jumped into the car and off i went. I got to the car park nice and early and had a steady stroll down the sea wall. The mist was so thick at this time i couldn't make anything out and ended up slipping down the bank a couple of times, laughing at myself as i dragged myself back up. i eventually made it out to my spot, poured a nice brew and waited, listening to the wind blowing through the grass. Before i knew it all i could here was zzzzzzzzzzzz. Last nights lack of sleep must of caught up with me! However the best sounding alarm i have ever heard soon woke me up "wink, wink". sitting looking into the eerie mist had a spooky exciting feel to it, catching slight glances of birds wizzing by at great speeds sent shivers down my back. I thought, not long and hopefully the geese will be up. Gazing into the distance 4 widgeon flew right over my head from behind scaring me half to death. ******!! flipping typical! I waited and waited, enjoying the morning call of a pheasent in the distance and watching the curlew dance around the sky.

Well i thought, looks like its not my day, suppose i'd best pack up. Then, just as i was about to pack up whoosh another 4 widgeon, falling onto my back and swinging through i got a shot off and down it went. I could hardly contain myself, shouting out "you little dancer" i quickly ran off to retrieve the best duck ever. It took abit of finding but when i got it i was absolutley buzzing!!!!! It may only of been one little widgeon but it meant more than any pheasent or pigeon i've ever had!

A big thank you to Oxfordfowler and Ayano3 for all there advice, for taking me out and showing me the ropes and for answering my constant barrage of questions

Cheers Gents

Well done that man nothing like getting your first foreshore bird you will be hooked for life now, one other thing you can see why it's handy to have a dog on the foreshore and IMO is essential for all wildfowling activities although there are certain times when you can possibly get away with it.....

Well done mate, nice to see you got your first duck and what a great write up. Maybe you missed others while you were snoring but you woke up in time. I'm sure I can speak for Oxford too when I say its never been a pain answering all the questions we get, its good to know there is people like yourself who will keep wildfowling in hands for the future.

`I had my first bird on a beach many years ago long before I thought about shooting` .

But seriously, well done is gives you a great buzz I am sure you cant wait for the next time out. And I am sure like many other fowlers you will enjoy the mornings out even though you dont shoot anything and when you do its all the better. This is my 5th season at it and I am still learning a lot, mostly to do with weather & tide conditions. Make sure you start a diary of every time you go out and not just the mornings or nights that you bag something.

Cheers,BBL

Brings back memories...will never forget my first day on foreshore.......one of best days ever...as the light comes up and you start to hear the distant honking as the squadrons form..........amazing...I froze, fell in ditches/it hailed/horizontal snowed hands turned blue and never got a shot at a goose.....to some that would sound like a disaster days shooting,I found it great for the soul.!!....

Hi tigger, thanks for your post. I have too say i totally agree with you. A dog is at the top of my 'things to get list'. Its very difficult without one, i have to be very selective and can't shoot a tide unless i have a mate with a dog

Cheers everyone for your posts, i've enjoyed reading them and its added to the experience for me, especially hearing about you other nutters who go out in all weathers at daft times of the night with nothing to show for it but great memories of beautiful mornings and a good laugh with like minded people. What a great sport :good:

It's great to have a dog/dogs as company as well as them there to retrieve birds makes the whole experience 100x better IMO......
