I think it all depends where you shooting, in my case I would shoot a couple... if I could, but if you go in locations that are considered pests, like pigeons, you would shoot as many as you can fit in the back of the vehicle you went with. My personal opinion, its that at least, don't let all that good meat go to waste.

As you are talking about 2000 using your field I suspect you are talking about pink feet.

When shooting inland or on the coast my limit on pink feet is 6 at the most and only then if i have not shot many recently. If I have shot a few then it drops to 2 or 3. I also shoot a private marsh inland where a couple of times a season we decoy pinks and strickly stick to 4 birds each and be off the marsh by 9am to let the geese in to feed for the remainder of the day, even if I have not had a shot. We limit the goose flights to 4-5 a season and as a result we usualy have plenty of geese all season using the marsh.

Its very satisifing to bag a brace or two , pack up and then sit back in the car to watch the geese pouring in while having breakfast. 12 in my personel opinion is far too many, but I guess we have all had the odd bumper flight once in our lifetime and as long as every bird is used I guess its ok on the odd occasion.

Do not forget that though you may see thousands in the sky at one time in reality pink feet are a fairly uncommon bird compared to pigeons or pheasants. The world population is probably around 250-310,000 and as there about 10,000 wildfowlers if we all shot 12 a season almost half the world population would be shot in a year.

I will never forget a guy i knew who had regulary shot a dozen or so canadas a season on his farm realy going to town on them and shooting 50 over 3 days. That was 7 years ago and he has never seen another goose on his farm since. The canadas had a very bad scare and though still using the lake on his boundary as a roost still remember the pasting they had on his farm.

There are a lot of simple and effective ways of keeping geese off crops without shooting them. Most farmers have a bird scarer that fires off on a timer , scaring rockets , rope bangers , simple plastic bags on posts or fire a few shots into the air , they all work. Shoot the few you want a few and then put scarers up and no further problems and the farmer is happy.

Bigest bag shared with 4 guns when decoying was 23 I cant remember what my own count was then but just last week between 3 of us we bagged 9 and I accounted for 5.

My best bag on the shore was 4. I could have had plenty more as I was sat in a very sweet spot and small groups between 3 & 10 just kept coming over me.

After the 4th one was down I just sat and had a coffee and watched which them fly past me. It was great to see. I have not had another day like it.

I'm not following some of these comments as I'm NOT a wildfowler.

I take a few ducks as I want but my Geese are ALL Pest Control, and most commonly Canada.

I take all I can, no limit, the more the better, I also shoot virtually all of them with a rifle on the ground, like I say I deal in Pest Control, and there is a lot of it in my areas!

I'm not trying to start a scrap here, are you guys talking seasonal "sport"?

Fair comment Dekers most of geese can be treated as pests, grays pinks & canada but over winter in the UK and either get moved on by scaring or shooting over decoys or as you do with a rifle I dont think you will start a scrap with your post and yes it is seasonal although I know that some of the farmers have a licence to take them all year round but we are not bothered up here all year like some areas. The fields that I shoot over the farmers want them moved on. They usualy will only fly to another farm and come back another day. It will all depend on what the feeding is like from spilt grain and tattie waste etc. Some areas the influx of geese provide an income to goose guides and other locals who in turn provide sport for paying guns. Fortunatly for myself I have miles of fore shore that I can shoot on as well as farming freinds who want the geese moved on. All the birds I shoot go into the pot in one form or another and I usually try and have a good supply in the frezzer for the year.

I get a awful lot of pinks on my permission at times and have never shot anymore than 4 , that should be enough for anyone , I keep hearing crop protection mentioned but have never seen a field ruined by pinks they may eat some wheat and paddle it down but it always recovers , they dont pull it up by the roots , other than that they prefer beet tops and old potato fields so do no damage at all on those , again I have never yet seen a pink digging up a potato field !!!.

To be honest I find some of the bags posted on here this last couple of weeks obscene, as said the worldwide population is not that huge and they deserve more respect.
