Only one person...

Again, no need to make this so difficult chaps.

Openness and honesty will prevail if you all answer this very simple question and drop the "I dont want to answer this because I may contradict myself" approach.

No not shy, far from it.

Just juggling work with trying to drag the truth out of you stiff upper lip chappies...

Lolling at myself here...

I was speaking to a barrister a while ago. He would love some of this. Like all barristers his job is to discredit a witness. He does this by asking as simple question

"do you consider youself an honest person?"

The answer is generally "yes" where he responds "what you have never broken the law" and the normal response is "no"

He then says "so you have never, for example, broken the speed limit".

Now this is where it gets tricky. The average answer is "well I have no convictions" so his stock response is "ah so you have never been caught that's not the same is it Mr X. Answer my question. Have you every broken the speed limit".

Now this is where it goes one of two ways

either

"Yes I am afraid to say I do speed occasionally" which is the right answer at which point the judge will say "move along now Mr Y you have made you point" and he will try another tack.

or

"no I have never broken the speed limit" which is almost certainly a lie and he has done what he set out to do. Discredit you in front of the judge and jury.

You will be amazed how many people fall into that trap.

Openness and honesty will prevail

Nice introduction to my question. A variation to the one AVB suggests, but to 'BRNDL rules'. A one word (from a choice of two) answer.

To BRNDL only:

Are you honest or dishonest?

No waffle, 'tales from when you were a lad', explanations or qualification. Please simply answer either 'honest' or 'dishonest'.

Personally I wouldn't brand someone a criminal if they had bought cigs and booze beyond their limit back from France as long as it was for their own consumption.

Ever paid money and had a CASH job done on the farm/house hold, hired a labourer for the day and paid him cash? All these are black or White situations.

There is no such thing as a limit if it's coming from the EU and its for personal use.

Also, just because you pay cash is not a sign of anything doing anything criminal. There are some very good buisness reasons as to why people use cash which are perfeclt legitimate.

I assume he is implying that by paying cash we would be aiding and abetting in tax evasion. By the same measure, I guess by not reporting BRNDL for tax evasion we are aiding and abetting a crime. There's a conundrum...... :hmm:

With the exception of a 40 in a 30mph fine 24yrs ago have never been in trouble with the law so I am indeed law abiding. so that answers your 1st point ;)

I dont smoke have never done so and only bring back the amount of cigs I am allowed for family if asked, have a very good source for cheap whisky so no need to smuggle that either so its a no to your second point my friend.

Maybe makes me boring but def law abiding, oh and wait til you here this one, I work abroad BUT still pay my taxes!!!!

Just because you havnt been caught doesn't make you law obiding

I used to speed all the time and never for caught, I was just lucky. I then got camera van'ed and am going on a speed awareness course. I do my best now not to speed as I've used up my get out if jail free card but I know I have a few tines anyway. The law is absolute and black and white. You either break it or don't. If you break it, but don't get caught you still broke it. We all break the law at least once a week, fact. How many have continued to hold guns when renewal cert delayed.

the difference is intent and remorse as well as recognising you shouldn't and trying not to.
