first time pheasant shooting as a guest! any tips to help me alo.g

Recommended Posts

Hello

a freind has invited me to shoot a day at his shoot! Im an experienced and decent shot (not blowing my own trumpet lol) iv shot pheasant woodcock and snipe on my own shooting permissions, but never at an organised day, i think i know the basics but not sure so here goes, bring a bottle, dont shoot low birds and if in doubt let it pass! Be carful of woodcock as they get u into bother and in the eratic flush have ur gun pointing were u shoudnt be!

If you can add to what i shoyld and shouldnt do id be very gratefull, as id like to make a good impression on the day!

On the shoot im atending they shoot alot of partridge, iv never shot this wee game bird before so am i in for a surprise?

cheers guys

Take your time.

Try and take the partridge in front if safe to do so, be aware of the location of the beaters. Only shoot a bird that has clear sky behind it. Do not be greedy, if you think the bird may not be yours to shoot, leave it.

Enjoy the day, enjoy the banter and you will have a great time.

typical most of us learn Bum Belly Beak bang but not oop north

as said focus on safety and enjoy the day. About all not mentioned is wear enough clothes if you are a standing gun, it can get chilly if the weather isn't great

tell me about lol the weather up here changes at the drop of a hat!

cheers all for ur replies

Alex, they did suggest the breast bit darn sarf but it turns out no one was interested in the breast bit - all the men were more interested in bum's and bumming.... :yp:

A hand wriiten thank you note goes a long way.

The most important thing to remember is THE TIP!!!! keep the keeper happy and from there on it's all gravy! also - remember the beaters are human - you'd be surprised how many guns forget this and see them as hired help!

Tip wise it all depends what kind of shoot it is and whether there is a full time keeper and who invited you. If its a farm shoot and the farmer gave the invite a tip may not be necessary the best person to check with is who invited you, on the subject of beaters they do tend to appreciate a bottle as much as the guns  and little things like that tend to help with getting invites back.

I know on ours where I keeper I'd refuse any offer but we are a small fun shoot one things for sure its always worth talking to everyone these places tend to get you shooting all over the place if you want it.

Some good advice given already but I can add wear a tie, be polite, and do not brag about the number of birds you have shot even if asked - just say...'I had a very nice drive thank you'.

Always thank the beaters before they disappear and write a thank you letter to the host and to the person who invited you.

And be safe!!!!!!!!!!!

practice your excuses for missing,

I took my mate out last saturday for his first day, he didnt disgrace himself, shooting a few nice birds, one was a bit low, and he straight away said so,

in fact the trainee keeper was the one to keep an eye on as he waved the barrels about and shot into the wood the other lads were walking through,

no one expects you to hit much, its not like clays, you cant ask to see a bird first, :sad1:

Arrive on time, dress smartly, probably no need for full tweeds, but cammo isn't acceptable on most driven days. ditto semi-autos. Muzzle awareness at all times, remember there are beaters in front and pickers up behind. Better a bird left than shared, but if a covey heads over a neighbour, remember he can only shoot two at best. Enjoy the banter, praise what is good and keep to yourself anything that is not, except unsafe shooting, share that with the host discreetly as soon as possible.

The aim of the day is enjoyment, so try to enjoy it.

Thank your host and fellow guns, beaters, pickers up etc., and remember, giving the keeper a MASSIVE tip increases your pleasure at the end of the day.
