turbo33
Just flicking through the jan edition of an air rrrifle magazine an came across this. A chap answered an advert for a second hand Daystate, 500 pellets through it, etc ect. Arranged to meet, it didn't say where. He liked the rifle so swapped his hard earned 750 smackers for it. Put the rifle in the boot of his car and went on his way. After approx 30miles of driving he stopped for a waz. Just as he was coming out of a shop, he had a text message from the guy he bought the rifle from, thanking him for the money and the rifle back!! He ran back to the car to find window broken in, rear seat ripped back and the rifle gone!! He obviously had the police involved, but they couldn't trace the bloke as he had used a sim only phone. Poor bloke. A lesson to us all not to be followed after purchasing, and maybe take a mate if its f2f!!
Hamster
Sounds odd to me, an awful lot of planning and mileage, not to mention assumptions that your target would stop for a waz (and not notice you'd followed him) and that he would be able to smash into the car without being challenged in a car park etc etc !! overandunder2012
if its true its a very bold crime lots of risks
kent
sounds like fiction to put people off private sales. I mean what if he had a full tank of fuel and used the loo before the meet? someone following you for 30miles? I should sort of pick up on that en-route
walshie
What if he hadn't wanted a wazz? Would the seller have done a round trip for nothing?

turbo33
Don't shoot the messenger, just passing it on, I'm not asking you to believe it. It sounds possible to me. Lash out on an air rifle, sell it, take a chance on catching the bloke out stopping somewhere and get it back and go again. If the guys succeed every now and again, its good money. There have been a lot more crimes commited for less money

turbo33
sounds like fiction to put people off private sales. I mean what if he had a full tank of fuel and used the loo before the meet? someone following you for 30miles? I should sort of pick up on that en-route Glasgow to Newcastle, 3 hours of driving and fuel. He would have to stop at some time. What if he hadn't wanted a wazz? Would the seller have done a round trip for nothing? Well allegedly he did stop to answer "the call of nature" . The seller stood to gain £750. Would you drive 60 miles to pick up 750 quid for 2 mins effort? Wouldnt he hear the wind like when you have the window down I think he noticed the window was broken before he drove off, and the back seat ripped away was a bit of a clue!! and why would the guy(thief) text him , andrew I assume because he thought it was amusing that he had just made a big hit and goit away with it. **** me, one open minded reply so far (thanks overandunder 2012) and the rest diving in with silly remarks and about as clever as Inspector Clouseau!! How about keeping an open mind that it could be a true incident and be aware that there is a possibility it could happen to you. Or you can write to the editor of Air Gunner magazine, Matt Clark and tell him your thoughts on the content of his magazine. Hamster
Hi Turbo33, On the one hand you say it was a three hour drive and then equate that 2 minutes work? It was 2 minutes worth of risk with 3 hours worth of driving and fuel (and no there is nothing that says you need to stop during that time) plus a huge amount of pre-planning and as mentioned already, assumptions. People are being realistic with their replies that's all. Could it have happened? Yes, was it probable that it did, no. It would be far less effort to just break into cars at random than to organise a sale and snatch.
bruno22rf
If it was printed in the Airgunner mag then it must be gospel No offence to the op

pegasus bridge
i don't see why someone would be so stupid as to do this and then text the victim admitting it? , but then there are some pretty dumb people out there.

Amazed
I am not sure about this story, but a similar thing was to do this follow home trick with top end moter bikes and recover them at a later time. the lengths gone to would be massive. There is a scam air gun floating on the fb hunting pages it's an r10 with a few parts missing going for peanuts, posted of course
hawkfanz
the guy would have no option than to leave it in the car if traveling alone there are no service area,s i know of that would welcome any one with a gun sleeved or otherwise,i have no reason to doubt what happened, afterall people have been killed for a lot less than £750. Longbower
A face to face purchase, without asking for proof of ID or address, Reg No? What if it was stolen? And what if the gun didn't work? For £750? Err, sounds a little unwise. But, I have seen people happily hand over bank account numbers and sort codes, just because someone in a office has asked for them!
