al4x
i wish sometimes that the guns would finnish off a runner.saves looking for a wounded bird for half hour without a find Having seen a gun do this when a dog was nearly on it I'd suggest its a very bad idea on most shoots
Dekers
So your not a sporting shot then or have little self confidence in your shooting ability , IMHO of course What the **** is a Sporting shot? As I have said many a time I get all the challenges I want shooting for a living, I don't have any desire to debate with anyone whatever they want to call sporting, and I don't have anything to prove to me, you or anyone else about by shooting abilities, I simply don't care if you don't agree, don't like it, or think I am wrong or can't shoot. You carry on with whatever you want to call Sporting! In one breath on this site we have everyone criticising people for taking long shots or using too small a calibre and on the other hand we have people preaching about sporting shots, it doesn't work both ways, I shoot things to bring them down, not to test myself on live quarry in the next county or 250 Feet in the air, I can do that on a range or at a Clay shoot! gixer1
Having seen a gun do this when a dog was nearly on it I'd suggest its a very bad idea on most shoots +1! I have to say one of the most popular "competitive" types of shooting is skeet, which is pretty much all shot at no more than twenty five yards (a skeet range is 50yards I think) and the last time I was at a skeet range here in the UK (many moons ago I must say) it didn't seem that too many people considered these shots "easy" as they were short range... ant1
yes of course it would have to be a safe shot on open ground with no dogs around

Maybe one that has a chance of getting away , how many sitting targets do you miss with a shotgun IE, the word sporting in my eyes, one stands a chance of getting away not gunned down on the floor of 20ft above your head

Regards, Gixer I would tend to agree about guns shooting birds on the ground but this should be covered in the rules of the shoot at the outset. There are not to many gun dogs on the Skeet range and the clays are moving and crossing, and as a Clay sport it is easy, after practise/instruction Skeet is simple mechanical shooting, the clays always come from the same place at the same speed and generally only minor wind issues occur, massive scores are achieved at the top levels. That is why Olympic or International Skeet was introduced to make life harder!

Your definition of Sporting is you miss it altogether and it gets away, you never ***** it and it dies slowly over a few days, like I said, I have no desire to debate Sporting and if that is what you think then crack on! EDIT the ***** above is P r i c k, it is not a swear word, rude or vulger in this context but the site edited it out! Catweazle
Maybe one that has a chance of getting away You make it sound as if you are pitting your wits against a pheasant. That's funny, like we use effective camo, precision engineered guns firing hi-tech cartridges, and still get out-witted by an bird with a brain the size of a pea. Face facts, if the bird escapes it's our incompetence, not a "sporting chance". If we really, really cared about humane kills we would never take a shot unless it was guaranteed. In reality we make a personal judgement as to what percentage of wounded birds we will allow, that varies from person to person, Dekers has a very low rate, others are higher. Amazed
It stops being humble? It's breed to be shot, but how it's shot can cause controversy. so I suppose your right, its not do humble after all

I'd still be willing to bet a few quid you couldn't clear a skeet range 3 times on the trot in a gentle breeze...so it can't be that "simple"

Fact is if I wanted to I could, so could you or anyone with a modicum of common with a shotgun, like I say English Skeet is Mechanical shooting, once you have it its easy! Olympic Skeet is another matter!

pontbeck
I'd like to see you shoot skeet with all the practise you want I've shot it for several years with a best of 99 but I can still have around of 22 occasionally ,it's not as easy as you make out

GingerCat
I shoot for the pot, if its sitting still on the ground and won't be ruined by shot then its fair game ( and if the Shot is safe before I get jumped on) I also use cyc and 1/4 with the decoys on most occasions, why make life hard?
