overandunder2012
hi following on from a thread where somebody got guns stolen i was wondering if people rent a self contained cottage to go on holiday for a week and wanted to take a gun where would it be stored whilst on holiday
plank06
Been wondering the same aswell mate! Also does anybody know If you could go to the coast in a caravan/ B&B and take your guns, in a lockable hard case etc?
lees
I'd go with barrels and stock locked onto different solid objects with cable locks, hidden away somewhere.
plank06
Would you be within the law to do so though ? Or has it got to be in a cabinet? Cheers
figgy
You just have to take reasonable precautions strip the gun down and keep the bits locked up in different places. Forend in glove box, stock in boot and barrels under bed. Figgy
Will Poon
I rang my FEO about this matter a few weeks ago, if the place your staying in doesnt have a gun cabinet he said just break the gun up and place out of sight in different places to hide . aris
Sounds like an opportunity for cottage owners - include a gunsafe on the property.
39TDS
Sounds like an opportunity for cottage owners - include a gunsafe on the property. The gun owner is covered by taking "reasonable precautions".I would assume if the property owner did fit a cabinet that it would be sensible for them to keep a spare set of keys, which would give them theoretical access to guns they shouldn't have access to. I also doubt many cottage owners would be too delighted to hear you were bringing guns.

Will Poon
Don't tell the owners of the place your staying in, that's what ive done. Whos to know Edited January 7, 2013 by Willpoon
Muddy Funker
I've been through this recently it wasn't too much of a drama. I bought a dokosport 2 gun hard case from ebay 2nd hand, a cable bike lock and an additional padlock. The place we were staying was fairly remote and we were self contained, I just cable locked the case with both guns to some pipework in the cottage. If we did head out then the barres would be left in the car with the other bits locked in the case indoors, both shotguns I might add. I think that was reasonable considering where we were, you could take things as far as you want and install a safe in your car if you think that is reasonable? Dekers
As someone said above, you have to take all reasonable precautions! The definition of that is only likely to be tested if you have a problem!
Bloke
I got one of the Napier secure gun slips. It has a gurt thick steel staple thingy that goes through the trigger unit, through the case, and lets you use a decent motorcycle cable lock to secure it to a handy nearby fitting. It can be used as a straight gunslip, or as a takedown slip - works in the car as well - just fix the cable to a bulkhead strut in the boot area.Having said that, I still take the forend/bolt with me as well. libs
As said before, the less people you tell the lower the risk. Discretion would be the key here. If I have ever stayed over night with a shotgun I put my breakdown case in a grip bag with clothes etc so nobody ever sees it walking in. I've bike locked the case to the bed frame I was sleeping in before, but I wouldn't leave the whole thing there if I was going out, some of it would definitely be locked in the car or spread around the room. If you do go somewhere and shoot, have a good holiday!
steve_b_wales
A good trigger lock is always a good precaution as well. They are available for a reasonable price. For example: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003DKX1H8/?tag=hydra0b-21&hvadid=11543470685&hvpos=1o1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8664157631034503125&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&ref=asc_df_B003DKX1H8

Hamster
How would you split a semi up ? Is that a trick question? They have three main parts just like S/S & O/U guns.

Must be a trick question, I can split my semi into seven component parts in less than 30 seconds.

I also doubt many cottage owners would be too delighted to hear you were bringing guns. If they were not delighted, they would not offer a gun safe :-) The owner could give all sets of keys to the guest. I think putting it in a gun safe while in a holiday property is as reasonable as breaking up the gun and hiding the bits all over. Possibly more reasonable. apache
The thing I think is crazy is if you go and stay with a friend and take firearms you cannot deposit your gun in his cabinet, as then he'd have access to your guns!
bobt
you have friends? Im sure they would rather a gun be locked up than not,
rimmie
I think I remember seeing an article on this in sporting gun, the advise was to either break the gun down and keep one half in the room with you and another half in the car or get a Napier security gun slip, the ones with the steel cable and lock it through the handle on the bath !! Or some pipes etc.... Edited January 8, 2013 by rimmie
