I am new to shooting and was wondering.... If for example I was to shoot a lot of pigeons I would keep a few for eating but is there any particular way of disposing of the rest of the dead birds? The reason I ask is I have seen many people on other hunting forums with many rabbits crows squirrels pigeons etc but surely you can't just put them in the bin?

If your new to shooting I wouldn't worry about shooting a lot of pigeons ;) they are much harder to hit than you might think!

Once you get the hang of it find a game deals nearby and sell them, there is no excuse for throwing edible/sellable birds in a muck heap IMO

I very much agree, I wasn't aware that I could just go to a game dealer, I'm not fussed about money either I just believe that if its edible then to throw them away would be silly, to me rabbit and pigeon are enjoyable to eat but my freezer is only so big :)

Chef1982 - Your profile says you are from Walsden - Is this the Walsden near Todmorden? If it is there is a Gae Dealer/RFD than 4 or 5 miles from you that will always take wood pigeons and head shot (With a rfle) rabbits. If you want his contact details please PM me.

Surplus game - to people in the village or game dealer. Pigeons just crown them and freeze them, very good eating - good video on crowning a pigeon on the videos section on here i think its a sticky. Anything you can not be bothered to do just take them to a game dealer. I try and eat everything i shoot if possible, sometimes i hang them and forget to do them in time, but crows and squirrels are firmly off the table, im tempted with squirrel but its just one step closer to eating rats. Crows tend to get buirried in fields, but my ferret loves a good squirrel.

Edit - carpenter mark thats exactly what i do, got a freezer for 22 quid collected on ebay from down the road, big chest freezer. I fill it slowly over the season and use it up over the summer. Although over the last summer i accidentially unplugged it to use the angle grinder - what a mistake to make.

Just slice off the breast meat and take it home for the freezer. As for the rest of the pigeon, well the fox will find it quickly enough even under a thick hedge. So will the crows and the odd member of the hawk family. Game dealers in general won't be interested unless there is a reasonable amount, otherwise its not worth their while for a few pigeons.

I also go lamping rabbits and many times they are just left where they were shot

Depends on the shooting.

If you are doing it for pest control, then it doesn't really matter. It's when they are shot mostly for sport that it does.

For example, the cases of game shoots allegedly dumping shot game is unacceptable because the birds would have been shot for no reason. Not the case with vermin control such as grey squirrels, where the animals are still shot for good reason, even when not utilised for food. That being said, it is still a good idea to use what you can - I mean, why not?
