Dangerous Dave and I were driving over the QE2 bridge today when a police officer waved us over a lane, we looked across to see a very distressed Asian guy perching past the barriers screaming down a mobile phone..........he looked straight at me.

On the way back from JJ'S we could see he was still up there, just found out that after 3 1/2 hours of negotiations he jumped to his death....poor sod

Makes you wonder what had gone so wrong? Often it's not seeing the woods for the trees and a resulting loss of perspective - 99 times out of 100 it's not that bad.

There was a young chap called Phil off here (forum name Hunter) who just dropped off the forum. I later heard he'd topped himself. I'd be intrigued to know why - he came across as being very precise and serious. He welded a drain grate for me and it was mm perfect. It's strange what the brain remembers and I remember that when the grate turned up in the post it was perfectly packed in brown paper and string. I mean it looked like NASA had packed it.

I digress....

Does make you think, looks like the person you were talking about made his life very ordered and precise, maybe something in his subconscious had to be controlled.

But that is just my opinion and i am not a trained psychologist so ignore my ramblings.

Always sad when someone is low enough to take their lives,as you said a loss of perspective on a problem that is probably very minor is sometimes the cause.

I can't imagine how horrible it must be to feel like that is your only option. You have to feel for his family and freinds who may never know why he did it. As anightrains said they will just be left wondering if they could have helped given the chance. Very sad

Been told there are a lot more suicides this year than in previous years.

Very very sad for people to think that this is the only option for them.

Not only suicides but also look how many normal run of the mill people have flipped out and killed others before taking their own life.

Something must out of kilter this year.

It must be horrible to have that as your only option left... My thoughts with his family :/

I'm not meaning the next bit in bad taste, but just to show how bad the suicide rates are in China:

Here are suicide nets outside the dormitories of the foxconn building (iPhone manufacturer). They also have them in the stairwells and outside the factory.... I can't even begin to imagine what people must think on their first day of work at this place...

ONE things for sure its NOT the cowards way out,you have to have BIG cahoneys to do that

I think the real answer to that is that you don't need big cahoneys to talk to someone if it's on your mind (I hope I meant that the right way round  ). There's plenty of support out there and family and friends would far rather see you get through it, by means of support, than suffer a loss having no idea what was going through the person's mind... (or worse - have to read their suicide note, knowing that there were things that could have been changed in their life to help them - meaning they weren't as trapped as they believed.)

Yeh, i agree about the loss of perspective. I also think that most people are much more sensitive to certain things than you may think. Too much of the media and all the bad news that goes with it can make you look at things out of perspective.

Hi All

I have cut down two lads who hanged themselves and found a few who have either cut themselves or taken overdoses in the last 25 years, no rhyme nor reason to most of them but generally the ones who take the overdoses and cutting themselves don't really mean to die the ones who hang themselves do.Evil Elvis don't beat yourself up over it mate its done and dusted you can't change anything so just move on

Mungler, really shocked and quite sad to hear that. Dont really post much on here now but was more active back then. Phil made me a really nice fire striker with my initials on it which Ive still got somewhere, will have to dig it out now. Seemed like a really good bloke and would never have guessed he would have taken that route. I did wonder what happened to him, last i saw he qualified as a fireman.

When I worked on British Rail,

I witnessed 2 or 3 incidents where people jumped off a platform and under a train, Awful for everyone around.

Another two incidents of people walking out in front of a train at a level crossing, One of them couldn't be declared dead for a week until I found his head wedged under some sleepers stacked on the side of the permanent way.

Only a couple of years ago, I saw sat at the front of the taxi rank when something caught my eye across the road to my right, I looked up as i heard screaming, a chap was falling down the outside of County Hall, my eyes followed him all the way down, the noise as he hit the ground, his body shattering, and limbs bouncing up and flailing about before settling at peculiar angles, Still wakes me every so often.

The inquest heard that having purchased a cup of tea he walked out onto the rooftop terrace, walked straight across to a chair that was backed up against the wall, stepped up onto the chair and over the wall, cup & saucer still in hand.

He'd gone to work that morning as normal, but there was rumours of redundancies and some people having to apply for their own jobs,

they reckon this might have caused him to lose perspective ???
