casts_by_fly
Hi All, I am going to buy a new shotgun for next season's game shooting and want some crowdsourcing to consider alternatives I might now already know about. I'll give you my dream requirements and max/min borders, you suggest me a gun. My ideal gun would be: O/U, game configuration (mandatory) 20b 30" barrels a shade over 6 lb or so multi choke case colored side plates or side lock decent chunk of walnut I know basically this spec exists with a beretta SP-V or a Guerini Essex, alas I was trying to be in the £1200 range (second hand gun). I could consider a 12 or 16 bore providing the weight was 7 lb or under (and would want 28" bbls then). I could consider going without sideplates or case coloring, but not both. I lean towards beretta for fit and don't care for brownings in this price range (and the copycat Mirokus). I've thought about lincoln and bettinsoli and their comparable models. Is there anything else out there that might fit this description? I want this to be my 'nice' gun that will be used for driven pheasants next season and general upland hunting when I get back to the states. This is going to be 'the' gun that I pick up most of the time and I'm willing to invest in it if it will be my upland gun for life. I just can't justify 2k+ investment. Thanks Rick
NorfolkAYA
Fausti Windsor ...nice gun for a nice price. I'm sure they do it in either 20b or 12b ATB
fenboy
The Macnab highlander would fit the bill , some come with a case hardened action and it has side plates. . They also do a lowlander model which is cheaper but no side plates. Or a Lincoln jubilee prestige. http://www.guntrader.co.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Lincoln_Shotgun_Jubilee-Prestige_For-Sale_130301165823001 Edited April 4, 2013 by fenboy
Shropshire_Lad
Hi, I've just gone down the 20 bore route too after falling in love with the light weight and sleek lines of a twenty. I went for a standard Beretta sp1 with 30" multi choke barrels, a dream to shoot. No case colour or sideplates but lovely to handle and use. atvb Paul. I think unless you are very lucky you are going to be in the situation of a great looking gun which is all show.to get the features and quality is going to be a big ask for £1200...... Rizzini Artemis maybe http://www.shootingtimes.co.uk/guns/298922/Rizzini_Artemis_20bore_shotgun_review.html Or by same maker http://www.williampowell.com/The-Perseus.htm Bit of a stretch http://www.guntrader.co.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Caesar-Guerini_Shotgun_Magnus_For-Sale_130319160436986 BLing! http://www.guntrader.co.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Lincoln_Shotgun_Jubilee-Prestige_For-Sale_130301165823001 Edited April 4, 2013 by HDAV
kent
Bond and Bywater in Preston have a nice second had Berretta in matching your description, about £600. It was very nice I was quite tempted
casts_by_fly
Hi gents, I have considered a couple of the guns already mentioned above. The jubilee prestige is on the list, but they are not in common supply, especially 20b. This was the gun that kicked off my affliction for sideplates. A mate on the shoot has the set (12-->28) but won't part with any. The lowlander doesn't do it for me. The highlander might, but I haven't found a 20b case colored yet to see. The rizinni guns in this range don't do anything for me, though I hadn't seen the artemis so thanks for that one. It could work s/h. The perseus is a nice gun (the all seem to have great wood) but no case coloring or sideplates it seems. Still one to consider. A second hand guerini maxus seems to be possible and might fit the bill. Kent- any idea which model it was (or at least a few more details)? I've been known to drive that far for a gun before and I have to go to Manchester Airport tomorrow morning anyway. rick
casts_by_fly
For less than £2k Not an EELL, but my local has an EL gold 20b for just around 2k that is seriously tempting. They also have a 20b SP1 at ~£1100 which is my fallback position. It isn't the most 'blinged' gun but I know it will last forever and fits me well. thanks rick
al4x
I was going to say I bought a second hand 687 SP3 and really for the money which was £1250 at a year old and hardly used found it brilliant. Fits well and it just does what its meant to game, clays or vermin. Not a knockabout gun but it gets used whenever and wherever. A mate has the 20b version and loves it. HDAV
Worth noting there are multiple rizzini's B & E being the main ones the powells are quite new and are custom fitted as new.

muffin
In for a penny in for a pound always better value in guns S/H I would look at used 20 bore Winchesters being a fan f you look on Dawsons Doubles www in the states you will see the upmarket quality of some models that never came here although I have seen some cracking 20 bore o/u game guns over here.Buy the best your money can new or used

casts_by_fly
Muffin, Buying in the states is more trouble than it is worth. The exchange rate is poor right now so there is no savings to be had and bringing it back over here on a trip home means leaving a bag and the associated hassle of traveling with a gun. Not insurmountable for the right gun, but at the moment it wouldn't save anything so no point really. Thanks, Rick
casts_by_fly
guys what does the op mean by '' case colored'' ? Overkill, As noted, case colored is a styling. In the past steel had to be heat treated to strengthen it and that left a coloring pattern. The heat treatment isn't necessary anymore (at least not in the way that produced the coloration) but i love the look. There are a couple of Webley's the 3000 http://www.webley.co.uk/Pages/3000game.html and the 2500 http://www.webley.co.uk/Pages/2500game.html Hdav, I like the webley options, so i will see if i can find one in person. Thanks Rck
