Thunderbird
Just wondered what scope magnification you use when using an HMR, main scenario being rabbits or other smaller vermin at 80-130 yards or so.
Bewsher500
anything between 4x and 20x some people like mag some don't mine has a 3-9 on it and it is stuck at 7x!
tweedledee
i shoot at 8 or 10 mag, try to get good glass rather than high mag
aister
I had three different scopes on my HMR when I had it and my favourite was the leupold 4-12x40. For down on the bipod 12 was plenty IMO.
Thunderbird
Yes I was thinking along those lines myself. It's currently got an Edgar Brothers 6-24 mag scope on it and I've been fiddling about for a while now with the mag. I am wondering if long term I go better scope and lower mag. exmarksman9870
I use a hawke varmint ll 6x24-44 ..seems good upto 24 but at ranges of about 200 yds for crows etc 19 mag is the best....a cheapish scope but very good bit gear.

Thunderbird
Yeah, I know that, I'm just trying to narrow it down a bit by what compromise people go for on mag / sight picture, wobble etc.

It doesn't matter and you can't narrow it down, I know people who shoot at 32x at 25 yards with a 12 ft lb air rifle, I don't have any issue with 6x at 200 yards, I have shot Bisley at 600 yards with 6x! whatever works for YOU

sitsinhedges
The problem with high mag is poor light gathering as the light starts to fade. I've got a nice Simmons WTC 6.5-14x40 on mine, seems about right
matone
4-12x seems to cover everything for me.
team tractor
Got a 4-12x50 hawk and can't complain at all
Thunderbird
I really like the Bushnell Trophy 3-9 mil-dot that I have on my 22. I was thinking of a slightly better one of similar type for the HMR. Uttings seem to do a good range.

bullet boy
I've got a Nikko Sterling Nighteater 6-24x56 scope on my HMR but i normally leave the scope on 12x mag.
CharlieT
I have a 1.5 - 6 x 40 on my HMR. Does me for everything from running boar to 156 yard head shot hares.

pestcontrol1
put a couple of hundred ££ into a older leupold vari-x 111 4.5-14x 50 good on any rifle and last you a life time or alot of people are using mtc viper mamba scopes and seem to like them i have a viper but not got it on a rifle as yet
jay222
My hmr has got a 5-25 falcon menace on it at the moment and before that it had a 7x50 on it which was pretty much perfect IMO
Gimlet
I've got a Meopta Meostar 4-12 X56 R1 on my HMR. I never go above 8 power in the field. I only use 12 X to make zeroing easier with that tiny bullet, though to be honest the sight picture of the R1 is so much better than the Hawke Nite Eye that was on it before that even that is unnecessary now, particularly as I zero high at 70 yrds. I shot my furthest rabbit with the HMR last week at 215 yards and that was on 8 power. Since changing to the Meopta I've shot plenty to 180 yds, all on 8 power. Knowing what I know now, if I was buying a dedicated HMR scope tomorrow I'd be looking for a S/H S&B 8 X 56 or similar, or maybe a S/H 50mm Duralyt. Same money as a new far-eastern cheapie, far better quality. For me, image quality is far more important than mag.
Thunderbird
Thanks for all these ideas chaps, seems the general feeling from the more experienced in better quality / lower (or not necessarily very high) mag. Was thinking on those lines. Cheers
