JimLondon
£3,000 pffff I got quoted £36,000 yes £36,000 to put my son on my insurance for a 2.0 vauxhall worth about £500. Mind you they were kind enough to say I could pay £7,000 down and then £4,000 a month.

Big Mat
Cheapest quotes i got were from drive like a girl. Mines up for renewal in 6 weeks, although i do have 2 years driving under my belt now, still £930 for the landy and thats cheaper than a little car! goodo123
Even though they are high prices for young drivers I can see why, a lad I know totalled 6 cars in his first year, not saying your lad will but unfortunately that's the way it is. What annoys me is at that age (i was a apprentice) so didn't have much cash and insurance was a nightmare. It was a necessity as it was a motorway drive to college, didn't have much cash for anything else tho and mot time was a bit twitchy
Vince Green
My son has had some ridiculous quotes as well. An old lady wanted to give him her old Toyota and the best quote we could get was over £4000. They are basically putting kids off the road because its easier for them that way. They are just cherrypicking the customers they want.
monster1971
had the same problem with my lad but we found it much cheaper to insure through aviva on a commercial vehical , we have a mitsubishi warrior and it came in under a grand ,but for a shogun it was 4k. steve_7
i have 12 yrs no claims and a year ago had a pajero lwb, went from £200 to £1000 with in a year, wasnt paying that so sold it and bought a ford galaxy and insurance went down to £300, now wanting a 4x4 again and same pajero i got rid of is now cheaper than the damn galaxy i hate driving, work it out our eldist has about passed his first year at college on carpentry course, getting ready to start lessons in a couple of months but after doing numerous quotes online he now has it in his head, why do 2 more years at college, he wont afford a car, he may aswell quit college, get a dead end job and drive with no license or insurance as he thinks he will never be able to afford to legally run a car......at the minute its like talking to a brick wall, but from a youngens point of view 2 months for them is a lifetime..... so the thought of no car, no college and a few quid in there pocket i can see where hes coming from.... just hope we can keep him at college and not in a dead end job.....atleast when i was growing up i could work when i was 14, save money for a motorbike, work 7 days a week and save for a car when i was 17.... now a days its like they dont want them on the road till there 25..... but makes me wonder just how many will be on the road with no insurance/licence etc.. its certainly a worry Edited May 12, 2013 by steve_7

Big Mat
Search for an insurance company who fit a tracker - to monitor their driving. Reduces the premium by a massive chunk. Only good if you don't drive between certain times though. No good if you work late or do the night shift. It would end up cost me more if i had one in my landy with the amount of times i go shooting and drive in the hours when they say not to! shakari
I've said this before but UK car insurance (esp for youngsters) is a right tuck up but as someone else suggested, you might consider going for a cheap but reliable classic car. I appreciate I'm an old fatr but FWIW, I have a 1982 Jeep Cherokee with a 5.9 litre V8 engine and a fair bit of go faster Edelbrock and other parts on it and here in Portugal I pay the grand total of E45 per YEAR, including glass cover to insure in. jackinbox99
Insurance is all about statistics, so its what the insurance company knows is a high risk based upon previous claims they have had. So, you need to try and work around those statistics. For example, you will probably find most young drivers go out and get a nice little car as their first car. Something like a corsa or saxo etc... and sure enough most young drivers crash in the first few years. So, statistically corsa`s and saxo`s are very high risk cars as more have been involved in crashes than say (for example) an ancient old Volvo, or even a Jag. So, you need to play around on the net getting different quotes for different cars to see what is cheapest. Also things like if you say the cars kept on the street, it will drop your insurance price no end compared to saying its kept in a secure garage. Saying it has an imobiliser increases the premium as thieves cause more damage to the car trying to bypass it, as does saying your married rather than just living with your missus. Third Party Only insurance used to be the cheapest as obviously the insurance company pays out a lot less if you crash as they dont pay for your car. But, now as more people have made claims on Third Party Only insurance, Fully Comp is actually cheaper! Adding older parents or even random grandma`s who live in your street will also reduce your premium, even if they never actually drive the car. And, rephrasing your job title can reduce it also. But, whichever way you look at it, the first few years of insurance are a killer. Even back in the day when I passed my driving test, my first car was an 850cc Mini which was older than I was. Cost me £20 to buy and insurance came in at £500, 3rd party only.

I'm with you on that one mate, I was skint doing my joinery apprentaship( 23 years ago ) but it paid off in the end( my old fella used to drag me out of bed ha ha Thanks' Dad), all his mates will be on £200 quid a week now and for the rest of their lives, he could earn that in a day in 3-5 years time, ATB Flynny Edited May 15, 2013 by flynny
