Pogo sticks aka semi auto shotguns....

So Boxing Day I went shooting with my cousin he took his dads semi a browning gold iirc a gas auto with speed load. What a bloody faff! Bought a slab of Olympics known (from previous bad experiences) cycle in this gun well being punchy and 70mm at forhill (nice ground bit muddy) had a couple fail to go bang, no biggy but the faff of the semi OMG what a pita it was possibly the only semi there (sorry to the regulars) cases bouncing everywhere hitting him in the head off the side of the cage, bobbing around in puddles.... Loading is a faff, anyway...

The last stand I tried the pogo stick!!! OMG how do you use them all the time??? Banging and clacking away wobbling in the shoulder I missed the second bird every time as I couldn't deal with slapping about it felt awful! The recoil felt worse than my OU admitted I was shooting off the wrong shoulder with one eye closed but it was truly awful! And that was only with one in the mag!

Went out again today to cannon and had a lovely morning some good stands some diabolical springing teals some manual rabbits (had the pair in one :) ) the semi was out again and a few more here a lady shooting an escort having real trouble working the gun and hitting anything a chap on the skeet (ok it was into the sun) who would have better off throwing the carts spraying empties all over the shop!

I have been so happy with my OU even if I shot like like plonks and hit 14 on the skeet!

End of rant thankyou for reading !!!

Happy new year!

So what's this semi owners unite? Just a statement of my recent experience I honestly don't know how you guys use then all the time. As for worst thread ever ? Come on, really ???

Well I apologise if I upset you sensitives its been 10+ years since I shot a semi and I was totally shocked, I put the faff down to my uncle who has arthritis in his fingers.

I'm glad your happy with your semis I just don't understand them. The feeling of the action cycling was like nails on a blackboard. I asked my cousin after the shoot what gun he would go for (I'm trying to get him to go for a cert) and he said "anything but a semi" that was without my prompting, and after he had shoot 200 carts in the last 4 days.... With a semi it's not that he wasn't dusting clays or couldn't hit a barn door he actually shoots rather well with it (***) but it does seem alot more hassle I am glad you like your semis I just don't as yet understand it, can someone actually enlighten me? The recoil didn't seem any less (the big plus point) so why?

just horses for courses HDAV, i like semi's too, and pumps, but the only gun i really miss is an old 325 grade1 with 28" barrels, i had trouble missing with that gun, the previous owner must have had a bit of work done on the stock i reckon, fitted like a glove.

It's not the missing that's fit and technique I read a lot threads extolling the virtue of these semi auto actions how escorts are brilliant al390 are incredible rather compelling arguments for most guns (regardless of action) I myself have recommended them on the basis of previous recommendations so 2nd hand if you like, but my personal experience seems so out of kilter with all of these well versed opinions I am shocked

Nothing beats a good semi :lol:

I personally like semi's its the perfect hide gun in my opinion, and also allows me to make a smaller hide due to the fact I don't need to break it :good: but I do get the fact when clay shooting they throw the emptys which can be a pain :good: I guess it's what your use to,but most of my shooting is decoying with only occasional clay days,so a semi suits my main type of shooting :good: BB

I haven't seen one semi owner pick up their carts at my local ground and I got so fed up with being hit with spent shells when on DTL I moved a position further down.

I can see the advantage of them in a hide and if people need multiple shots (FAC versions) but I just think they're a PITA on the clay ground and not enough owners have / use the safety flags for my liking.

It got me thinking did they design the cages so the empties hit you in the head on purpose (very of putting on a sim pair.... )

Perhaps they put the stands just at the side of the puddle do you get wet hands trying to pick up empties? Then prickly bushes so you get cuts and priks on your hands ???

Maybe if you always shot semis the cycling of the action is normal perhaps even comforting? I don't hide shoot so the advantages are lost on me

see you can't do that on a full squad, and it could be a competitive advantage in a comp putting at least one competitor at 4 stations off his or her game....

love my maxus and find i shoot better than the 325 with it, with no really difference in kick from either and i prefer the speed load of the maxus, however when it comes to the franchi with long spring jesus that kicks like a mule, usually when out with lads on sporting clays i take that and each week loser from week before takes his first ten shot with that haha

never any issues with carts for me either, oh another benefit is one less barrel to clean on the semi haha

My brother has a Browning B80 and he fumbles and fiddles with it, makes it seem like hard work. I shown him dozens of times how to load/unload but no he still drops cart's everywhere

The err Franchie, someone said it kicked like a mule! They do but only if you have oiled the magtube! Don't do that and they are one of the most nice reliable auto's out there.

U :good:

Why is it stupid? I actually tried shooting one and offered my opinion of my experience.

my Remington 1187 if favourite choice clays and hide , if someone has a problem with any semi they should give it a chance without having a rant over things in 1000s of rounds I have never come across :( and as for bangin and clacking ??? Edited by delburt0

I started out on clays using o/u still do now and again use a semi as main clay gun baikal mp153 £570 new and made in russia nice recoil pad on them. We all like different things some semi's are good for some and not for others.

I couldnt get on with a hatsan escort felt too light and that new loading system they have I dont like but other people like em. think the extra shots help on fields vermin/pigeons/corvids etc and for those doing psg

So your saying I imagined the slapping of the action? And being hit in the bonce by empties? The felt recoil? And the faff of misfeeds?

How many shots is a fair chance? Just because you haven't experienced it doesn't mean it isn't true ....... Or STUPID as you like to say......

Oddly my uncle (who's semi it is) would rather he kept the franchi he had before....
