matty*
hello all, ive been invited on a .410 day on a little DIY shoot close to home. i have a huglu 3 inched chamber over and under. its a lovely little gun fixed choke at 3/4 and full. ive been using it for clays using fiocchi 3 inch 19g 7.5 shot and been hitting the driven clays well. im wondering if a 19g 6 shot cartridge will be ok or are the any differnt loads available for driven game. now i no a lot of you all say there not suitable to game but this is only a small shoot and the birds what are there will not be 'sky high' if you get me. it has been a tradition for this shoot to have a .410 day for years. so back to the question........... witch cartridge? information on makes, loads ect will be greatfull thanks matty
robbiep
First off, does the shoot have a fibre only requirement ? If so, then it's Eley. That's it. After that, it all depends on what your local RFD stocks. You should be able to get Eley 2.5" or 3" in No. 5 shot, but the pattern is going to have a fair few gaps. I'd be inclined to go with your first suggestion. No. 6 shot should do perfectly fine for relatively low birds.
deershooter
Stick with the 6 shot it has a better kinetic energy at range you can go to 5 shot but patterns will open up don't forget with such tight choking take them no too close Happy shooting and please give us a report on how the day goes Deershooter Edited December 31, 2013 by deershooter
matty*
plastic wad is fine on the shoot. i think i mite see if i can get hold of some fiocchi 19g 6 to try. like i said ive tryed there 7.5 and they were great on driven clays. if anybody has anymore suggestions please feel free to add them o and just been told that apparently viri fob do a 20g 5shot load ? anybody used them? ill let everyone no how the day goes
bicykillgaz
The fiocchi are great in no6 it's what I use to use for crow decoying, I'd just keep it to 25yrds on pheasant to start with till you see how they kill I've never shot one with the .410 so can't vouch for them but I'd think they'd be up to it. Wouldn't bother with eley no5's there rubbish mate. Have fun!
Underdog
I have been on small bore days and always used 7s, keep the pellet count up and use your 7narfs. Forget kinetic energy and keep pattern density. Have fun....I did many times! U.
silver pigeon 3
In my .410 i use SAGA 7's, have killed many a rabbit and close pheasant with them.

wildfowler.250
always used 7s, keep the pellet count up Beat me to it. I always used express but imagine the Fiocchi's are a good shell.
Underdog
Donkey's years ago I bought one box of Eley 3" and it was the only box I bought and ever will do! The Winchester 7narfs were however MUSTARD! U.
nicknicknick
fiocchi and express are the only ones I would use. Win were great and they do a 20g cart but it's 600 quid a thousand.

matty*
well after actually missing the small bore day i decided after id brought 250 fiocchi 19g 6# i would still like to use it on a driven day. it was the first of a few beaters days yesterday and i decided the huglu was coming with me. all in all i shot 2 good partridges and a pheasant. i did how ever drop a woodcock aswell but unfortunately we was unable to find after a while searching as i would have liked to get it stuffed. i missed some easy ones aswell but cant blame the gun as to be honest i just couldnt get in the zone had things on my mind all day and couldnt just focus so some slipped by. Only downside was some of the cartridges were tight to get out as its not an ejector. i can say that i will be using it again befor the seasons done. keep sensible and not going for those 40 yarders and it did the job just shame about me at points thanks matty
Dangerous Brian
Check the shot diameter on the Fiocchi shells. If they are Italian/ European etc they could be 1/2 or a full shot size larger than the English version. With the .410, every pellet in the pattern counts and it might be a Fiocchi shell in No.7 would be a better balance.
FatFreddysCat
I'd stick with the 19g 7.5s and keep the range below 30 yds. Good pattern and sufficient energy for a clean kill at that range.

welshwarrior
No7 for me my sbs was 2.5" I used to use just got a 3" OU for nothing so will be using on the sporting but normally shoot a 28 bore Again prefer 6&7 in the 28 seems to kill better and cleaner than 5s

hoggysreels
Does Fiocchi do, 2.5" cartridges.. lm limited to 2.5" chambered catridges and wouldn't mind trying an alternative to my usually fourlongs
bunny_blaster
I normally use fiocchi but last weekend I bought some cheddite 3" 6's as my supplier was out of my usual. These seriously are a hard hitting shell. I'm using them tomorrow for our last driven day
