camokid
here you go mark aka mr bullet boy lol hi all as its my 30th today whats a better way so spend it than chasing foxes around the countryside lol i have just got in the rain came early and ended the night i was expecting it but not till later.. i had a phone call yesterday out the blue from a random farmer he explained that he was concerned with the amount of foxes on the land and he didn't want so many kicking around when the lambs come next month.. he asked me if i could give him a hand obviously a snatched his arm off lol we arranged to meet the next day in the light so we could have a mooch around his boundaries in the gator . he showed me the fields that he was more worried about and had seen foxes in.. after a good chin wag he left me to crack on . i walked up the hill and sat down for five and got my lamp set up on the rifle . i had a quick scan and nothing i gave a few calls and once again had another scan this time a fox had ran out from cover and was now only 60 yards out i got the rifle to my sticks lamp back on and bingo first fox in the bag.. he was a cracking big dog fox not the sort you want around young defenseless lambs.. after a quick piccy i found a nice spot for him out of sight and proceeded with my night.. the next scan showed a set of eyes way off in the opposite field across the road i thought id give it a call see if he was up for it.. he must have been hungry as he made a mad dash over to me i watched as he came closer with each call . he was now 80 yards out and running from right to left i stayed on him in the scope and as he became lever with me ... there was another fox sat no more that 40 yards looking right at me . my attentions turned to him and i quickly took the shot.. with that fox in the bag i quickly scanned the field only to find the fist fox still here but now in the hedge line with a squeak he stood still for that split second and my little 17 hit home... so that was number 1 2 and 3 all with ten miuets another cracking size dog and his vixen in tow as i was doing well on this side of the rd i didnt want to rid the few fields of all its foxes and decided to take a walk round the other fields oppersit.. i made my way over road crossed the gate and took my first scan ....two sets of eyes shone back first one over 100 yards the second way out at the top of the field.. i raised the gun on the sticks and found the fox in the lamp by now he was unsure and began to run i gave a shout and he paused i let the 17 do it thing and number four was sorted... as i walked to the spot where it had been struck he was nowhere to be seen i scanned around and picked up eye shine only 40 yards out in some long grass he was hit but had a bit left in him i fired a second round fast and let him sleep... on inspection he was hit fine but as it was over a distance perhaps the bullet lost a bit of steam... number four ended the nite and so did the rain... another dog not as big less weight and a tad of mange on its tail and underbelly i left plenty of new fields for the next trip i cant wait.. cant help but love that little hmr round many thanks happy hunting

apache
Good work. Just random question - why the .17 when you have a .243 and a .270 in the cabinet? Wouldn't be my first, second or even 3rd choice for fox.....

camokid
Good work. Just random question - why the .17 when you have a .243 and a .270 in the cabinet? Wouldn't be my first, second or even 3rd choice for fox..... reason being as it was a new permission i was not sure what to expect and didn't want to take a cannon to a horse paddock lol i do tend to take the 17 to a first time place they where smaller fields and had a lot of features as in a rail way houses and close roads so to be honest the 17 fitted the bill tonight...
