motty
I would like to think not many shooters shoot stationary birds , not really giving them a chance (unless you are a very bad shot)..... u want. Some popcorn j dog I think he means let the first bird land, shoot the second, then shoot the first as it flies off. Mind you, nothing wrong with shooting a sitting pigeon. I do it from time to time when they land a bit far out. This helps build a bag.

fenboy
If possible I shoot the furthest bird of a pair first which then gives me more time for the second . If they are decoying well I am happy to let one land before shooting the following bird, a good way to get three shots off with the auto . If a couple take me by suprise and land I will happily shoot one on the ground or both if I can line them up Edited January 31, 2014 by fenboy

Hamster
There is no absolute, letting one land and taking other incomers is fine as long as you have enough control (and arc of fire) to allow the sitter to fly far enough not to smash it. Shooting the further one of a pair is also good advice as long as your timing and skills are up to the job, basically different days and set ups will mean you have to adapt and make instinctive shots. Killing a single bird is more clever than muffing up a pair.

Mentalmac
Good on ya fenboy some seem to use the site for a bun fight yet don't start a topic for others to enjoy or learn from. Mmm I love buns... off to get some food now. I love reading questions and answers, always makes for good learning, a bit of banter is fun too though especially if we all biccar about stuff like we all seem to. I am in awe of the greats on here, wish I could shoot a pair! I get over excited by two pigeons and usually miss both as per Hamsters comment. Paul taylor
Do pigeons fly in pairs/groups? Can't remember it's so long since I've seen more than one doing about 60mph high up with the airliners:(
tignme
You should not take second shot until you make sure bird first is dead,if pricked second barrel it.
The Essex Hunter
How do you set up the left and right. Some say let one land first. woodfordpigeon If it is pigeons, then I shoot the back bird first...the same with geese then it will be a bird second or third from the back then keep the gun moving too the next one. -Mongrel-
I will generally take the bird on the wing first giving me time to get on the second as it gets up and flies away. If both on the wing then yes, the back one first and continue the swing onto the next. That said I have no reservations with taking a landed bird, I'm there to shoot as many pests as I can, the farmers haven't asked me to keep the shots sporting. pigeon controller
If they are decoying let one land ,shoot the second coming in, then shoot the first going away. If they are flying high not decoying pick the first in shoot it then pick the second going away. I do not think we absolute rules on the method it's not a computer game with cheats. If you ask one of the lads in Afghanistan which one they shoot first they do not refer to SOPs ( standard operating procedures) they just do it . Each to their own. Swingit
