byjovecarruthers
I thought it was a shame that Lone Survivor moved away from the truth and adopted a "Hollywood Ending". The true story was interesting enough without the embellishments.
Twistedsanity
So what was the real ending to the film then?

Daz1986
lone survivor was a good little film but sadly to much hollywood for me!! jumping off cliffs!! and been hit by 7.62 long and short and fighting through!! stuffing mud and dirty in wounds!! they should have just cracked on with a realistic storey Edited February 4, 2014 by Daz1986
sako751sg
Watched it last night after reading this and imo they have ruined it in favour of making it too dramatic and thus far fetched. The true story should have been enough to make the film but could hardly watch it after the mission was compromised as it was too Ramboesque. novice cushie shooter
it is a good action movie you can watch and enjoy if it is not taken seriously. its based on a true story. I havent seen the film yet but i assume it has been altered to suit the big screen. If it has its a shame as its a cracking book

byjovecarruthers
So what was the real ending to the film then? Taken from Wikipedia: Historical accuracy[edit] Michael Murphy (left) with Matthew Axelson, taken in Afghanistan While based on true events, the film alters events in many regards.[45] Early in the film, the four-man SEAL reconnaissance team is discovered by three goat herders — an elderly man and two teenage boys. In fact, Marcus Luttrell wrote in his book that only one of the goat herders was a boy, not two.[46] The decision to kill the three goat herders or let them go has sparked a significant amount of controversy and debate over the Rules of Engagement and morality in combat.[45] Also in dispute is the number of Taliban fighters involved in the ambush. In Luttrell’s original after-action report, he stated that he and his teammates were attacked by 20-35 insurgents, while his book places the number at over 200.[47] The screenplay describes “A solid line of at least fifty Taliban in firing positions on top of the hill above them."[47] The summary of action for Lt. Murphy's posthumous Medal of Honor describes the enemy force as numbering "more than 50,"[48] while the official citation puts the number at "between 30 and 40 enemy fighters."[49] Author Ed Darack takes a contrary view in the book Victory Point and estimates the number of enemy fighters at 8-10.[47] The film shows Luttrell (Wahlberg) being able to walk after the Taliban’s ambush on the four-man SEAL team. In reality, Luttrell explained that his legs were numb immediately after the ambush and when feeling did return to them the pain from the shrapnel in his legs made it too painful to walk, and he had to crawl seven miles looking for water and sanctuary. A rocket-propelled grenade hurled him into a mountain crevice where he was able to hide from the Taliban. [45][50] Luttrell also expressed that he did not witness the MH-47 Chinook helicopter being shot down, as seen in the film.[45] At the end of the film the Pashtun villagers fight off a Taliban attack in a firefight, which never actually happened. In reality, the Taliban were outnumbered by the villagers and had no intentions of attacking the village. They did, however, try to sneak in and capture Luttrell in secret. Luttrell also did not go into cardiac arrest after he was rescued, nor was he near death, as seen in the film.[47]
