OK so what would the current replacement for the Alfa Romeo GT JTD be?

Needs to seat 4+ (adults) have good big boot (Golf/A3 etc too small) think lots of luggage

Spirited drive with good performance and economy 40+ MPG not cost the earth (Astons etc don't qualify)

Good looks and reasonable running costs comfortable on long runs 3 hours plus but fun on twisty stuff when you feel the need.

A true "Grand Tourer"

I'm stumped...

Toyota GT86 too small and tiny boot, VW Scirocco tiny boot, 4 series over budget but closest i have found.....

BMW 3 series GT. Or, if you don't like the looks of it (and they are VERY individual) the 'new' F31 3 series touring. Absolutely fantastic. I've got a 325d M sport touring, 42 mpg (over the 2,500 miles I've had it so far, real figure, not what the stupid EC figures say), pretty good on space, 218 bhp, goes like you've put a stick of dynamite ... well, you know where.

MG ZT-T with the V8 in. Can pick up great low mileage ones for about 8k spend the other 2k on an LPG kit. Soon to become a modern classic the way the prices seem to be creeping up.

Mmm interesting option parts an issue? How old are the latest ones must be 06 or older now?

The A4 s line is the worst traction in any car I have ever driven (talking the later type) not sure they get into 10k yet. There is good reason the traction control re-sets itself even when you turn it off. Seriously they make old Cortinas and Seirra with their rear wheel drive and unbalanced mechanics seem like a dream. Nice comfortable motorway straight line cruiser that's about it frankly.

10k spend will limit you to the Odd ball choices like the alfa were some real bargains can be had OR buying something great yet a lot worse on fuel like a Scooby. Look at your mileage carefully buying a far better though thirsty car can pay off through cheaper purchase price if you not doing massive mileage. The Alfa is no bad choice because residuals have always been very poor in relation to what you get.

What a Shame!

I have JUST sold My Cavalier yesterday

Would have been perfect for you! Seats 5, HUGE boot, Spirited drive "well lets face it! They ALL run on Alcohol now eh?" Ethanol!

The Alfa stable is limited to a guiletta, nice car but its an Astra ( I have an Astra....) the GT was the left feild choice at the time as it was cheaper/younger than the golf/A3 of same engine (1.9/2.0 TDi) and certainly better spec. 320d coupe perhaps but at the budget won't be much newer younger than the GT (54 plate 100k miles) oddly I know the original GT owner swapped to a sirocco...

I've just bought a scirocco, the boot is smaller than a golf, but then I don't need to space.

Parts dont seem to be a problem, i have the diesel and so far had no problems getting bits. They are beginning to have a bit of a following which i didnt realise till i bought one. Overall a fantastic underrated car. Yer 06 will be the newest you can get however a lot of the V8s have well under 50,000 miles and I would bet if you come to sell it in a few years you would get your money back unlike the audis or bmw alternatives.

Jag stype 2.7d twin turbo se,loads of spec, goes like the brown stuff off a stick, will give you 45mph . Really quited even when hoofing it.One of the best cars I have owned was a rover 75 conn se 2dti with the bmw engine.Only moved on to jaguar when rover went under, if I was honest I prefered the rover over the stype.

One of the fellas at work borrowed a Skoda Octavia VRS when his car was in for service, fantastic bit of kit. I took it for a spin and its a proper quick motor and nice inside as well. Should be able to pick one up for 10k.

Diesel? Have a mate with a Fabian vrs diesel he rates it
