Broke a personal record today

Had a day off work today, so went to the only perm I have that has rape in, there was about twenty pigeons feeding away with an odd one or two flighting in every ten minutes or so. Only problem with the field...... The way the pigeons were coming in I would end up with spent shot hitting the farm, so found an area further away avoiding shot fallin on the farm where I could get a shot at them flighting up the edge of a wood. Plenty cover in big grass tussocks so didn't take hide or deeks just the gun and the dog, the makings of a lovely day. The downside.......... 100 shots and not one single pigeon to show for it broke a record for worst day out performance wise ever!!!!! I swear I saw the dog roll her eyes after the tenth miss then she went to sleep at least she had faith in me

Jesus , did your cartridges have lead in ?

Well done for being so honest , sounds like you could do with some help , go for some lessons and have someone look at your mount / gun fit .

Fill out you location in your profile and maybe there would be someone local who could help , are you trying to shoot them too far out ?

I was once shooting on a huge 'L' shaped pea field and killing a few pigeons. I kept hearing loads of shooting coming from the other end but could not see it. Once i'd packed up I drove around to see what was going on. I was amazed to find out they had only shot 2 pigeons between both of them. They asked if I could watch to see if I could offer some pointers. It turns out they were blazing away at anything from 80 to 100 yards!

That's exactly what I was doing wrong. Last year, when I first started using a shotgun, I only shot 8 for 56, or something like that. I was taking shots at birds that were too high and showing little interest in the decoys, I am still a rubbish shot but I am now waiting for them to get closer and I am hitting between 50 and 70 percent of the (very few) birds I shoot at. The strange thing with me is that I have quite a good success rate with the first barrel but if I miss with that barrel, or go for a second bird with the second barrel, I miss many more. It is probably down to me not keeping my cool, but it is odd. Anyway, today I had the first 3 for 3 shots but ended the morning with 4 for 10.

Its just occurred to me , you have been reading the threads about natural England trying to change the licence so you have to show you have attempted to scare the pigeon first .

So you have been today to scare them and are going back tomorrow to shoot them , clever thinking but that change to the licence is still away off and may never happen

Completely agree with you Fenboy, no doubt, if he had hit 10 pigeons, he would have felt better, still it was a day out.

At least he is seeing some to shoot at , my farms are devoid of them !

We in the same boat then, today I walked 300 acres of my permission......number of pigeons on the rape....0, number of pigeons flying around 3.....I have no idea what as happened to them

Thought that might brighten up someone's day..... My gun fit is fine, I'm not a beginner I've been shooting since I was old enough to hold a gun, although I attempted some high shots 90% of things were easy targets, the only thing I can think of is that I am trying to get used to shooting with my glasses on. I still had a nice day out, since I left keepering I'm just happy to be out wether I get anything or not, however I have never had a trip out as bad as this but at least things can only get better!!!!!

I know the feeling of having a lot of shots for little reward. A few years ago I was given a couple of good quality guns. One an english s\s and the other a mirko o\u. I knew there were going to be a lot of pigeons ( they were the days ) about so i took the mirko and an 250 shells. I set up a decoy pattern out and the birds came well. In the strong wind the majority of birds were crossers , but with quite a few head on high shots. I ended up using 224 shells for 56 pigeons. All my kills came from head on shots ( about 70 shots ) , but I missed every crosser. ( 150 ish shots ). A week later using the s\s I shot the rape stubble again in similar conditions result 95 pigeons for 125 shots.

I later found out when I sold the Mirko that it was a trap gun and desined to shoot a foot or so high. So for the crossing shots I was shooting above the birds , but for the head on shots shooting high was just giving them a little more lead.

I have never been a fan of o\u guns despite giving a fair trial to them in the past , but the first day later confirmed my opinion.

I once stood with a bloke on our shoot who was missing all over the place, if I told him he was 3 foot behind on that shot the next shot he was 4 foot below and so on .When we stopped for 11s he told me he had a problem with his eye and when one flew towards him it looked like there was two, so I told him he had been shooting at the wrong one try shooting the other one instead, it still didn't make much difference but he enjoyed his day.

Have a look at Pigeon Shooting Tips. The post regarding A1 shooting ground. May be the way to go ???

Look on the bright side...at least you were not paying for the privilege. My mate was loading on an expensive shoot last year. He was loading for a guy who had paid for the whole day (ie himself and 8 guests). The guy had just under 500 shots for 5 pheasants. Apparently he really enjoyed the day!!

I think if I had paid a lot of money to shoot quality pheasants I would be well p******ed off is I missed too many....at least with the pigeons its only your cartridges!! :good: :good: :good:

Just a thought, you said you were shooting from tussocks of grass. Were you shooting from a sitting or kneeling position? I know from expierience that trying to shoot from these positions is a lot more difficult than the normal standing, feet pointing where you are aiming position.

I was sitting down, I was telling a mate about it and he said that might have something to do with it, after he stopped laughing
