whats wrong??

Recommended Posts

I have been shooting for around 35 years mainly game shooting and a few pigeon , but still a few days at sporting clays - on our shoot we have had a few sporting layouts with fifty clays. My standard of shooting seems to be declining rapidly to such an extent I am thinking of digging the golf clubs out again!!

I had 14 / 50 yesterday - I appear to be stopping the swing and starting to aim / poke at targets, anyone got any ideas before I empty my cabinet that is how down i feel at the standard of my shooting

Read, Chris Batha's 'Breaking Clays' the section about shifting eye dominance as you get older, a real 'eye opener' for me, excuse the pun! Some other useful stuff in there as well and much cheaper than a lesson as a 'First Point of Call'! Oh yes and he is not a relative!

I'm 67 and have been shooting since I was 13, I have also noticed that my shotgun shooting has deteriorated over the last couple of seasons, there was a time when i hardly missed anything, now I reckon I hit about 50% of what i shoot at!

I still have no problem using my 22lr & 17hmr.

Had any eye tests in that period?

I have exactly the same issue in that I seem to be aiming an stopping the swing. My coach put this down to using my brain - I am trying to think the shot rather than shooting it. I have a session with him this week and he has told me to leave the brain behind.....

At the last clay shoot I got around the issue by loading the gun and as I closed the gun I called pull which meant I had little time to look but just react...... I went from 4 / 10 to 8 / 10. The slower clays still meant I thought too much but I just took these earlier.....

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Good morningall

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to reply to my post. Sorry it has taken me so long to come back but I have been working away for a few days.

I do have an eye test booked for next week - I have worn glasses for over 20 years but varifocal for the past 8 years or so with no apparent issues - could the varifocals spectacles be an issue??

I shall indeed book a lesson and let everyone know the outcome - strangely enough as fenboy said I have lost around three stones in weight recently maybe thats a factor too.

We are setting the trap up at the farm tommorow evening for a few clays I shall post the results shortly after.

Maybe time to buy a gun with a shorter barrel ... faster swing.
