otherwayup
Couple of fields of Rape near me have had the perimeter harvested. The remaining crop looks normal, not black. I assumed seed crop would be grown as seed crop and the whole lot taken etc. and that farmers bought in seed. Has he likely taken some for seed for himself and will spray off the rest now? Is that common?
rich1985
Seem bit early? Your weather must be dryer than this way! The headland may have been fitter than the rest of the field or your farmer may have just wanted to cut a bit to test? Any pigeons?
Harnser
He wouldn't be harvesting it if he hadn't sprayed it off. He could be swathe cutting it to kill it before combining it . Harnser
otherwayup
He's combined a single pass all the way around two fields.
aga man
I agree wit harnser the rape will have already been sprayed off and the crop just about fit. The headlands are the slowest to dry out the farmer will take them off when there almost dry leaving the rest of the crop to dry quickly when the sun comes out. The combine will be in there this week no doubt. Edited June 28, 2014 by aga man
belly47
sorry if this may be an ignorant question but as a novice pigeon shooter ( my first summer ) who does not know much about farming practices on crops. when you say they have not been sprayed off, what exactly are they spraying and how does it affect the crop? do they spray off other crops prior to harvest? thanks in anticipation of informative answers belly
belly47
http://www.monsanto-ag.co.uk/roundupharv.pdf found this but it does not explain why its being sprayed and what it does belly
pegasus bridge
This might sound like a daft suggestion , and apologies in advance if it is - are there grass margins around the outside? It might have been cut to keep a clean edge to the rape being harvested?
The Essex Hunter
It is to let the rest get some air in the crop as in post 5..... TEH
sitsinhedges
http://www.monsanto-ag.co.uk/roundupharv.pdf found this but it does not explain why its being sprayed and what it does belly I think that it is only rape that is sprayed off. A couple of weeks prior to combining they will go over the crop with a dessicant type spray to stop it growing and allow the plant to dry out so the seed is easy to separate from the pods when harvested proper. The alternative is swathing where it is cut and left to dry in rows before being picked up by the combine and this is a far better prospect for shooting as the birds will drop into it and it is shootable. rich1985
Spray with something called pod stick first as the name suggests it sicks the pods so they don't split open spilling the crop on the floor if we get a rainy or windy time when the crop is fit, about a week later it is sprayed with round up to kill the rape plants but also any weed growth in the crop so it is dryer when it is combined about 15 to 20 days later. On my permissions all the combine able crops are sprayed off prior to harvest.

It might have been cut to keep a clean edge to the rape being harvested? Might not be as daft as you think , all our rape on the marsh have got a 3mtr margin round the fields and this week they cut the grass round all of the fields , so unless you knew the fields it would look like they had taken a strip around the outside of the field............ours don't look like it will be cut for at least 3 weeks.. B725
Some time's they will spray barley to bring the harvest forward it's been done a couple of times on the farm I shoot it also kills of any rubbish growing with it.
JDog
Unless you actually saw the combine in the field, and it is early, what may have happened as others have said is that the grass margin has been mown.
otherwayup
I know nowt about farming, but I hope I can tell if a field has been combined. This is one of the fields from this afternoon, but he has now taken the lot from the other field. Does this look like it's been sprayed off? It usually goes dark, almost burnt looking doesn't it? JDog
Yes the rape has indeed been desiccated and harvested. That is very early indeed. You ought to have some good sport if that is the only rape which has been combined in the area.
rich1985
That is well early but it certainly looks fit! Your about 2 weeks ahead of this part of the world! You will get a pigeon or 2 on there I would say! Prob didn't combine any more as the moisture was prob bit high, if the weather nice this week I dare say it will be cut.
