steel and pigeons

Recommended Posts

32g of steel is a good amount of pellets for decoying.

28 gram will give about the same as a 30 g lead load so more than enough.

As steel patterns tighter than lead no wonder some are doing well with 24 g loads. It's distance that needs to kept sensible.

Inside 25 yards a steel clay load will kill pigeons all day Long.

I've shot 24 gram steel at some long clay targets and had good breaks with them same as lead, mixed up steel24g and lead 28g In my pocket and loaded my semi without looking at what carts were going in so shot them with out knowing as I wanted to see for myself if I could tell a difference in recoil speed and breaks. No difference at all through the semi, my son tried it and he said the same.

28 grams of steel is the approximate equivalent of 39 grams of lead, in volume. This means even a 24 gram steel load have more pellets than your average lead pigeon load.

So I'm looking for 24 of 5 or 6 then it looks like. Now just need to find the right deal.

Proper cartridges, how much please?

dont think they do steel.

but 24grams of 7 seems awfully popular with those shooters who want "value"

Use lead.

This video suggests he gets on pretty well with Gamebore Pigeon Extreme ( 4m in to to film).

What would the total bag be with steel? I guess the guy would use steel if he rated the stuff?

He doesn't wanna use lead, that's why he asked for non toxic load advice. Fri afternoon, shot 81 with 28g steel 7s, Saturday shot 156 with a mix of 24 and 28g steel 7s. 28g - £41.25/250 and 24g £37.50/250.

forelock and load nr bury st Edmunds Suffolk. been using the steel my self last 2 weeks getting on very well with it carn't see what all the fuss is about it not killing proper and all that?

Same, 28g 4s I think they are. Cheap as chips and for a properly committed, decoyed pigeon they are more than good enough. Although saying that, killed one at 54 long strides on Sunday!

i had a few hours at the pigeons on saturday with lead as i didnt have any light steel loaded up, and i shot terrible about 3 for 1  that night i loaded 2 boxes of 28gr 3.25mm steel and killed 39 (a lot of these were flighting and not coming in) i then went back onto lead when id run out of steel and gave up after 10 shots as i was getting no where, not sure the reason for this (maybe the extra speed of the steel) but i wont be using anything but steel from now on.after reading some of the replys on here will give 24gr a try also to make it a bit cheaper ,not used much factory steel but homeloads and a briley i/m was killing them cleanly at some very good ranges (further than i ever did with lead)

So if I am to move from LEAD to STEEL and I use 32g no 6 at present do I drop the load and increase size or drop load and size.... confused in Cambridge :-)

use what ever load is cheapest but make sure its fast and #5 steel minimum. i had my 24gram #5 loads running fast.

last couple of days (against my better judgement because of the shot size) i tried some express nitedral 24gr steel 7s ,and killed 50 odd pigeons with them , i was actually quite impressed,i started of with nothing over 25 yrd and it powdered them,so then tried them a bit further ,i had a briley i/m in my versa max and it worked nicely to 40 -45 yrd i didnt push it any further but these cost me £31 /250 so for birds coming in to the pattern they were very good and cheap aswell.
