Visited one of the projects we maintain today and found a round lying in the car park. Not seen anything like it before, its a short .22 center fire with a green plastic cap where the bullet would be. The cap has a cross marked on it. Should I bin it or hand it in ? Gave it to my new manager to look at ( he has ten shot semis on his ticket and several rifles ) but he didnt have a clue as to what it is.

The reason I added what guns he has on his ticket is how damn cool to have a manager who buys his bullets by the hundreds and has four AR15`s ? My jobs safe :)

Dont want to look a cock taking it to the police station but as the project is a drug dealers home dont want to bin it.

I know it's a First World War Dud, probably a British 18 pounder shrapnel shell

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordnance_QF_18_pounder

You can't be too careful with these little beastie's, as many contain gas, which can leak out if the shell is moved, any many of the gases used were completely odourless, you only knew you'd had a dose when you started coughing your guts up, by which time, it was too late for you.

Can anybody identify this harmless looking lump of metal..??

Yes, it's a standard issue "Mills Bomb" had grenade, minus the pin and locking handle, therefore highly dangerous.

A few years back an ex military "expert" secretly brought one of these back to the UK and decided to dismantle it late one night at home. His wife heard a "firework" explode and thought nothing of it until the early hours when hubbie didn't crawl into bed. She went downstairs to find hubbie stone dead and riddled like a colander, the police at first thought he'd been shot dead by a Mac 10 or similar fast firing sub-machine gun, he had so many holes in him.

Moral of the story, leave unidentified objects well alone and let the experts deal with them, (the French Government still have 200 full time "Demineurs" engaged on Battlefield clearance).

You want to try Ross Sands in Northumberland mate

The place is LITTERED with 5 pounders 10 pounders motars etc :)

Mate of mine (Brian) was walking on the beach one day on the northumberland coast line and found an old anti personel mine in the side of the dune. B)

There are quite a few beaches up here that were used in the war for test sites for the new rockets (missiles) that they used on Hurricanes i beleive. They had a Bomb disposal team sweep the beach to remove them all.

just don't keep it wondering for too long as technically you could be in breach of firearms conditions holding ammo you have no licence to hold. It sounds like a blank to me but bearing in mind where you found it you never know if its got a criminal connection.

I have heard of a method of using blanks and replicas to make a close range firearm (obviously not to be discussed on this forum). Sounds like someone in the druggie centre has been having a pop at pulling a moody. Hand it in and if you haven't contaminated it they might be able to get a dab off it, might be connected to another crime.

Gully / Hunter top research that was what it was. Took it in to my local police station intending to let them know where I found it, the fact it was next to a crack house etc and ended up giving it to a desk jockey who just said " oh, ok, thanks "

Within twenty minutes I was called to board up / secure the building next where I found it. How much are flights to New Zealand :good:
