Having had a pretty awful week at work I was well in need of some R&R so got away from work bang on time on Friday night and went for an evening flight on a marsh very close to my house.

Having walked a couple of miles in chest waders, pushed a boat over a huge mud pan and rowed a further half mile to get to our spot, my mate and I were extremely hot and sweaty and pretty worn out. We set up and waited for the ducks to come in for evening flight, and waited, and waited... just after the sun went below the horizon the marsh erupted, there were 1500+ widgeon and teal in the air at any one time but they were not playing ball...

My mate ended up with a single widgeon and I got a tufted... not a great result but worth going to see the birds.

Saturday morning I was up at 3:30 to head for a different marsh, this time about 45 mins from home. Not such a trek to get out and we were set up and ready. We saw a nice steady stream of ducks all morning, with a good number of widgeon decoying. My mate and I took it in turns to shoot first so one of us wasn't always shooting at flaring birds, unfortunately my mate who normally shoots pretty well was not on form and had a fair few shots for no birds with plenty of gun jams. I managed 3 widgeon and a teal.

After morning flight i went home, grabbed my pigeon gear and my eldest son and set off to a local stubble field. my mate on the other hand headed off to a local gun shop!

My son and I had half an hour of dry shooting on the pigeons managing to bag 7 between us, followed by 2 hours of torrential rain and a further couple of pigeons. Now wet and cold we decided to call it a day. My mate ended up getting a new gun to resolve all his issues

Sunday morning (today) another early start and to another local marsh (my mate needed to test his new gun!). This time the tide was a bit kinder so no big push with the boat, but still a fair distance to row. We set up and waited... this time not for too long! a few birds came into the decoys but as it was still very dark we let them be as neither of us were 100% sure of the species (better safe than sorry!) after another good lift of birds, this time a little more slow and steady, my mate ended up with 2 widgeon and 2 teal and I ended up with 2 widgeon and a pintail.

After the flight, we went and rebuilt a bridge over the other side of out marsh due to it being flooded off a couple of weeks ago (which was seriously hard work, especially for a sunday!) On my way home i called the Mrs and she said my youngest son wanted to go pigeon shooting...

Oh, go on then! so i got back, grabbed my gear and set off again!

This time it was a bit of a family affair! me, my 2 boys, my dad and even the mrs came! my dad and Mrs sat behind us whilst me and the boys shot, the boys taking it in turns. Unfortunately the birds didn't really play ball but my youngest son got one... for a couple of hours we ended up with only 6 birds but we all had a good chat and a nice afternoon out.

Total for the weekend

1 tufted, 1 pintail, 1 teal, 5 widgeon and 14 pigeons
