First One This Season

Having given September a miss I thought it was time to take my gun out with me instead of my binoculars , with the marshes being dry and very little wind I wasn't expecting to see much but it was a lovely evening to be out with a nice sunset and the moon coming up from the east . I did see a few duck when I was walking over to where I intended to flight which was close to the mill, but with no water laying about I knew they were not going to drop in any where close to where I was. I heard the first sounds of geese before I saw where they were coming from in the distance,

then as they got nearer you could see most of the skeins were well out of rang but there were a few small lots flying over the marsh 50 to 60yds high but I could see about a dozen coming my way with one a bit lower than the rest which to me was just about in range , gave it a shot with the chocked barrel and I thought he was on the way down so I didn't give it a second shot but somehow he recovered to carry on then glided down on the next field . I left my gun near the gate and took me dog to where I thought he came down and with it now being dark had to let the dog hunt around and very soon I could hear the dog snorting and I knew I had the first goose of the season. Through out the time I was there I saw between 800 and 1000 geese and this might be one of those seasons where you might stand more chance getting a goose than a duck especially on the marshes where I was. I took the photo this morning and with it being the first time I have put one on I am not sure how it will turn out.....Good luck to you guys who are still waiting for your goose , your turn will come.

Well done a nice write up too MM , your Lab looks very nice , how old is he ?

Thanks fenboy......without your help putting a photo on here would have been way behind my small amount of knowledge with computers so thanks again for that , and my dog is 8 in February.

Nice picture MM. I think I recognise the Mill.

How you doing Whitebridges ......... The mill in the photo is the first one along the Bure from Yarmouth beside Banhams farm.

Great stuff MM. I should be out on a big tide in the morning. It would be nice to see a few pinks.

Thanks motty......I used to love being out on the water but sadly most of the gun punts , boat sheds and the house boats are all gone and apart from one ronde which the G Y W A own, all the others are impossible to get to with out a boat on a big tide , and not only that there is a hide where the bird watchers can look at every thing you do , although I do use it myself sometimes to watch the duck in the winter and with no shooting down that end they do become less weary and numbers can sometimes run into the 1000s

I am sure it will be only a matter of time before you get your first pink of the season , after watching your video ( which was very well done and entertaining ) if one or two do come in range I don't fancy there chances of reaching old age.........Good luck for tomorrow .

I would not have put him at that age , he is looking well, thought I could recognize the mill , can it be seen from the acle straight ?

Yea my dog don't look to bad for his age , a lot better looking than his master and yes you can see the mill from the straight but the one I was near last night was 4 miles up the road and about 1/2 a mile into the marshes , close to the R S P B reserve.

I wonder what they are doing under this moon? I am tempted to pop out in an hour or so for a look

You go Mat , your got nothing to lose and every thing to gain , although if there only just arrived round your way they might be resting before they get into there normal routine .

Mat and Motty the N Norfolk pinks are using the moon at the moment , but flighting very early back inland just around dusk. had a magic night , big tides , flooded marsh , and pinks comming inland in small parties just after dusk . Only just home ( 9.30 ) but the evening was well worth it. Two tired to write the flight up now , but will do when I get a chance, but it was one of the best early season moon flights i have ever had.

Sounds like a very enjoyable flight. I await the write up!
