Maize pigeons

I have been hiding out on the marsh for the last couple of months, only being prompted to have a go at some pigeons when I noticed some local maize fields being chopped up. I had driven past the field a few times and seen a decent amount of pigeons and crows tucking in. When I went for a closer inspection, I didn't find corn all over the place, but I guess the birds pick at little bits and pieces that seem irrelevant to me.

On Saturday I went for a go, the old man (who I don't shoot with very often) was with me for the day. We got there just before first light. It was nice and frosty.

I got around 15 flocked decoys out and a magnet with hypa flaps on. This was to be added to by another magnet and dead birds when shot.

It was a quiet start and I started off poorly. Most of the shots on offer were at extreme range and I struggled to get my eye in. The old man shot one or two nice birds in this time. The sun rose and cast it's light over the pattern, which seemed to improve things a bit. By now i'd shot a few and my confidence had swelled somewhat. The sun was proving to be a pain, though. With no cloud, anything to my right was very difficult to see and shoot. This resulted in a few fluffed chances throughout the day.

As expected, the flightline from the woods behind came on much stronger in the afternoon, and many birds then paid the price for committing well.

At around 2pm, the action had all but died off. I left the old man to clear up all the birds from the pattern, while I had a sweep of the outside of the field with the dog. I added another 3 to the bag from this.

We both enjoyed the day. We picked 82 pigeons and 2 crows.

The old man and his dog.

Well done great bag, interesting ironwork round the tree??

Yeah, there are a few trees on the field and they are all surrounded by it.

Looking at the pictures I think you were hoping for something else to fly by? ????

Ah, you spotted the calls. I was prepared in case there were a few ducks or geese around.

Well , done , I recognize the tree your old chap is set against , must be nice to get a good few shots after the wildfowling .

It was nice, but it may be the last time I shoot there, with the farm being up for sale.

It hasn't always been good, shooting with him. We haven't always seen eye to eye, but we get on ok at the moment.
