red_stag88
Ooohh yes, I have been pulled to one side many a time for trying to acess websites "of a violent and hate promoting nature" - that includes Cabelas, Winchester, Gun-traider etc... When they ask why I reply that "Joe Bloggs wants some football boots, he can look at them on the net, he can read reviews of them on the net, hell he can even buy them on the net! I cant look at a new air rifle, when actually its just the same! You need boots to play, you need a rifle to stalk!"
NGhost
I work a Oxford Uni, the only ban is on obseen or ileagle stuff. Sounds like the PC crew are in the driving seat.
Jonnyni
I work for a Defense Company e.g. making missiles etc so shooting/hunting isnt a problem
Rimfire
Hi Guys, I am in a similar business to JonnyNI, except my business is preventing the missiles from working. Our business has a similar policy whereby they ban you from viewing things they think are inappropriate. We call these people the 'Fun Police' and believe me, there is no fun in it if they catch you. Fortunately this forum is not blocked by the gateway so I can still have some fun. Regards to all Rimfire

Lurch
Well I work for meself, so I'm not likely to have that problem. Are you a member of BASC or CA? If so, then ask them for help and advice.
Cranfield
I,m sure the BASC or CA can,t do anything about it. There may be a complicated, technical way or circumventing the "bar". I suspect you would be in deep trouble, if you did this and were caught. If the computer/link provider, whether its an Employer, School, College etc., wishes to bar access to certain areas of the Internet, thats their perogative. red_stag88
They make us sign this thing saying that we wont acess porn, raicism, hate, etc. Its just a shame that they are so narrow minded that they think that because I own guns and shoot, that I am a blood thirsty lunatic bent on world domination. Allan
I also work in a college in south essex where any student access to sites containing the word gun or shooting is denied, as soon as a student tries to log on they receive a message saying they are being monitored. Crow_Misser
Get friendly with the person who looks after your network and talk him around, that the only adice I can give, but it's worked for me. Just give your side and explain why you need access to these sites I'm sure any sensible systems admin can see your point. CM

berettaboy
Johnny I used to work for GECM in Edinburgh on the DIRCM project (or Nemisis as it was then called). I was the mechanical engineer on the stabillised mirror. I am a FEA specialist (Ansys). TIALD was a bit before my time. I'm not in that business anymore. I Set up on my own and now specialise in the automotive and rail sector. BB
Guest flightline
I also work in a college in south essex where any student access to sites containing the word gun or shooting is denied, as soon as a student tries to log on they receive a message saying they are being monitored. I think that could be challenged through the College governors, especially if it could be shown that most of the sites in question were relevant to courses offered by the college. lurcherboy
My two sons are not allowed to view similar sites including pigeon watch. I took this up with their headmaster who informed me, and I quote ' people will no longer tolerate the holding of guns in the public sector and it was just a matter of time before all firearms are banned' So I have stopped my free maintenance of the schools vehicles (i am a mechanic) and told him I would be applying to join the school governers. Apparently the can't find anyone willing to sit on the board. Best to work on the inside eh? Lurcherboy

webber
You should write to the chair of governors, complaining that your childs education is being compromised by petty PC and point out that his research is into a lawful activity. Threatening to remove the child from school may be a bit too drastic, especially if they want rid!!! You are entitled to ask specific questions at the annual parents meeting that all schools are obliged by law to hold. (please note my experience is in state schools, not private), but I guess that the rules are pretty universal. The school will inform you in writing of the meeting; you must forward your question in writing a couple of days before the meeting. Neither the chair of governors nor the head teacher will be happy, and you may find that the rules get bent. You may however find that the school has bought into a package controlled by the LEA, to whom you may also complain, but only after you have exhausted the other routes with the school, who will be expert at dragging matters out. Regards Webber ( ex chair of governors)
