HuskyRich
Hey guys Couple months ago I was successful in obtaining my SGC... In truth, I actually didn't expect to get it as in the past I've done a few stupid things and I've known other people not be as lucky with criminal convictions... At the end of the day I've not done 'owt to do with violence or anything disorderly, I've not nicked anything nor served any custodial sentences... But thats all 100% in the past. I was just wondering when it comes to FAC's will the fact I have previous convictions weigh any more in the decision making process? Or will the fact that I've already got an SGC help me? I've always been interested in old rifles such as the Lee Enfield and the Mosin and would love to take up a bit of shooting with them and/or maybe start a little collection but was wondering what the likely hood of me getting a fac would be under the circumstances and what would be the best way to go about it? Cheers guys
Luckyshot
If you were that bad you would not have got your SGC, apply you have nothing to loose.
Gordon R
A bit surprised you had to ask the question. Why should your past convictions weigh any more for a FAC compared to SGC? Your FEO is the person to ask - not a public forum. He knows what you have done, rather than members on here speculate with flimsy detail. A bit odd. JimLondon
You will also have to show good reason for FAC ie pest/vermin control with permission to shoot over cleared land, or target/rifle club etc
Imperfection
The background checks the Police carry out are the same whether its a SGC or FAC application, but the difference with S1 you need good reason to own them.Become a probationary then eventually full member of a target shooting club and that will satisfy them. If you need any advice PM me as i deal with this kinda stuff. Edited December 29, 2014 by Imperfection

You can't just get a FAC for 'live' rifles just because you're interested in them (though techically, you can, but it's a PITA to even go there). You need to show 'good reason'. That can be satisfied by being a full member of a target club, though you will only be allowed to shoot your rifles on approved ranges. To become a full member of a club, you need to apply to join as a probationary member, attend regularly for (I believe) 6 months, and then get full membership. Some clubs have maximum member numbers, so operate waiting lists. If, once you've got your FAC down that route, you allow your membership to lapse, then you no longer have 'good reason' to possess. The club WILL notify the police of lapsing members (they are required to in law, as they are also required to notify police of new members), so you will probably lose your FAC if your membership lapses. Dave-G
Although it's not required, I'll gues you have somewhere to use the shotgun. Might be worth cheecking if you will get permission to use rifles there too - or somewhere else - or a club. You'll be surprised who has well spent convictions and have turned their lives around in more recent years.
Davyo
Good job your not under Durham, they are going to town on SGC/FAC holders, turned up unanounced,I thought it was these new visits.Didnt ask to see my guns or cabinet. But told me that if my son is seen anywhere near a local lad (not my sons direct friend, but a friend of a friend) both my licences and my sons will be revoked under association. They then came back that same day to interview my son and advised me to have all licences at hand( I suppose with a view to revoke). Thankfully they left without our licences satisfied that my son has no direct friend ship with this lad.

Davyo
Bloody hell, talk about guilty by association that's shocking! Phoned BASC for help/advise and was told they are using this association thing now to push Durham , and they quoted in the new chief constables words" the tuffest licensing authority in the UK"I have never been in any trouble in my 52 years and was made to feel like a criminal under investigation.BASC didn't want to know, just said that they must have reason & can revoke under association. roostshooter1
The best thing to do would be tell basc where to go and fight it in court if you have done nothing wrong or assisted this youth in any way then you are not guilty and should not have your licenses revoked
Liamey
I might be off base here, but what do BASC actually do for their members? I increasingly come across posts where the poster has been less than impressed with their assistance or lack thereof. Are expectations set too high, or maybe even misguided as to what actually BASC can and can't do?

I can't speak for others, and I know that many members on here are not happy with BASC, but they have helped me on many occasions, mainly for getting stupid restrictions taken off my FAC. Without them, I would have either paid for a solicitor or remained restricted.

Cheers guys Well you'll need to join a full bore club first and serve the club probation (usually 6 months) before you can apply for a target shooting FAC.
