Knives in the field - How many uses ?

Have loads of knives cos I'm a knife nut as well as a gun nut, but they all get used. Have a few good sheath knives for working on deer in the field and a full set of butchery knives, used for that purpose also.

Have various small sheath/folders for when we're out rabbiting and general shooting use, one of which is a good heavy folder which doubles as a priest, and DIY 'keepering work. Baler twine needs a good knife.

Baler twine needs a good knife.

Not if you use the trick my mate showed me, stand on the twine with your feet either side of where you want to cut it to pin it to the ground, then tuck the free end of the twine under the bit trapped by your feet and pull it back and forth to saw through it.

Course this doesn't work if you want short bits, or if you're cutting the end off of something you've lashed, or cutting something free, or.... On second thoughts best keep that knife handy after all! ;-)

A mate recently used his knife as a nail to stick a target on a tree to zero his rifle which worked but he managed to hit his knife and smashed the handle off!! I would strongly advise not to follow in his footsteps and use your knife for this purpose! Although if you do then make sure your not alone as it is rather funny to watch when your not expecting it!

I'd be annoyed if someone on my farm was shooting my trees!

A little off subject but still on knives,I use various knives and foolishly used to leave them in my shooting bus( out of sight but never the less still in the Car) I was waved over one morning by an officer who asked me if I had a rope to pull a standed car out of some flood water. When I obliged and went in the back of my 4x4 to get the tow rope the officer saw my knives in the draw.He advised me that I shouldn't even have them in the car if I am not going about my business of shooting and it is an arrestable offence. He was quite polite about it when I explained what they where for and took no action. But he clearly stated that if I am not going or returning from the farm they should not be in my possession. So I now only take my knives if I am going to the farm.

I know a lot of you will be aware of the legislation re caring knives, but quite a few of us won't,so just a little heads up.

:) I also have one of those rough and tough plastic handled plastic sheathed (Mora?) knives which I use on an almost daily basis at work. It is strapped to my work bib n brace. It is used for digging out wood around sunken Timberlocks screws and bolts, hacking out whatever and cutting through membranes and cladding etc. It gets some serious abuse but always comes back for more and because it's carbon sharpens back up in no time.
