JDog
I have not one single maize cover crop on any of my shooting and the birds appear to have gone off rape so I have to look out for other opportunities. Having watched a few heading into a birdy mix recently I got there at 9am to find two large white vans with flashing lights blocking the only gateway and two men in fluorescent jackets standing right on the flight line entry to the crop. Apparently they were looking for the 'AV' and they would be an hour fixing it once they found it. Not that I know what an 'AV' is but it was a frustrating start. At 11am I returned and the men had gone. So had the pigeon flight line but in my amateurish way I just guessed that some might return so I plumped to set up with minimal kit on the edge of the spinney nearby. I had only a net and my two floaters to start with. The wind was very strong and kept blowing my hide down so I had to create a 'half hide' and leave the bottom half open so that the wind could blow through the gap. Jasper was not impressed with the arrangement. If I can get the pictures in the right order the arrangement was as follows: The birdy mix on my left. I could not shoot in that direction because of the road. The wood on my left. All of the birds came from the right of that wood. The sky line. Having spotted the birds coming round the wood they disappeared then suddenly appeared infront of me on the horizon. The rudimentary hide. I had two good hours then a game shoot started up in the reservoir wood half a mile away and four hundred pigeons got up and went and that was the end of my session. I picked 52 in fantastic conditions. Edited January 28, 2015 by JDog

fenboy
A good bag I would say under any circumstances. I cannot see what your inner net is but if its a stealth / clearview type one of the main drawbacks is that they catch too much wind in rough conditions I have recently brought a new one that will be more suitable in windy conditions , I think I have about 8 nets now and I may have to seek help for my net addiction ! Fisherman Mike
Is that a wild bird mix set-aside or a game bird mix if you don't mind me asking..? The only reason I ask is that All my Landlords expressly forbid shooting over wild bird mix. Sounds like you had a great day nonetheless Edited January 28, 2015 by Fisherman Mike
JDog
It is wild bird mix set aside. There were hundreds of tweety birds on it all afternoon, mostly green finches, chaffinches and gold finches. The cereal element of the mix is just about finished as the crows have been in it for months. The gold finches were on the thistles.
sako751sg
Cracking bag fella and the mix will be a haven for the wee birds in the harder times.

SNS
Lovely pictures - a very picturesque spot you were shooting in. And, I have to say, if the wind was anything like we've had in Birmingham city centre today, then very, very fine shooting indeed !
