steve_b_wales
I'm going to apply for the above calibre on my FAC renewal form, and intend to reload the ammunition for it. Does anyone reload for this calibre, and if so, what powder do you recommend ? Steve.

steve_b_wales
VihtaVuori n135 Cheers. I'll check what powder/s I have. I know I've used Vit' before, but not sure what one. I want this calibre mainly for long distance corvid control, but possibly for the odd fox if I see one. Have you used yours on foxes, and if so, how did you find it? Underdog
I knocked about with a bloke with one for years. I have a lot of respect for this cal. He used bl-c2 and hornady 25grn bullets. U.
pestcontrol1
Steve no problem with the 17 rem on foxes a pal of mine shoots one and he really likes it and there is an added bonus of not getting bullets exiting much but they do the job just fine

A good friend of mine in the USA, uses this calibre for shooting Coyotes, as he says it does'nt damage the fur too much. I'm looking forward to getting mine later this year. Steve. Dave-G
I use Varget in mine - it's a bit on the chunky side and blocks the funnel occasionally but seems very consistent. Using 25 grn V max.
Alycidon
I use Varget in mine - it's a bit on the chunky side and blocks the funnel occasionally but seems very consistent. Using 25 grn V max. How do you find the 25gr Vmax performs on foxes at say 150 -180 yards. A
jamie g
great calibre. alot wont shoot the 25 vmax as well with the standard twist. most go for a 1 in 9 twist if you go the rebarrel route

mick miller
It sounds duller, more moderated, less crack. Or is that just the camera mic?
Dave-G
Bit of both really, the DVR was in a butt sock. It is louder but I have a gurt big caliber specific Predator 12 (12 baffles) hanging off the end - became necessary when a land owner weren't happy with the crack from the older one. It an LVSF so the extra weight helps ensure sight of the strike too.
fizzbangwhallop
I use N135 and 25grn hollow point Berger Varmints in my bog standard Tikka 595 synthetic....... very, very impressed! Certainly round here where the majority of shots are clear line of sight... if not I wait until they are as the little HP vaporises if it touches anything unseen on the way through. In over 30 foxes shot over the last year and a bit, I can only think of 2 that haven't dropped like sacks of spuds on the spot........ and those 2 only went a few yards. Got a One Less Charlie mod on the front with an EGW pic rail on the top and I switch from a Zeiss to a Drone Pro 10x on dark...... light recoil lets me see the strike. Love it. atb Fizz
Rem223
I have a 1:10 twist barrel so the 25gr Vmax isn't ideal, the 25gr hollowpoints are fine however. I get great results with Benchmark with 20gr Vmax, and I use Varget with the 25gr Hollowpoint. Most barrels these days seem to be 1:9 twist but it is well worth checking to make sure you get 1:
barrelsniffer
Ste I've had a 17rem in my collection over 10 years now used V135 but then tried Hodgdon’s H4895 and not used anything else since and that was about 6 yrs ago i think, using 25gn max bullets. I shot the Same rifle next day and loved it ! Hard Hitting and no recoil I want in mainly for long distance Corvids (300 yards +) A friend of mine in the USA takes Coyotes with his, at ranges of 350 yards. The fur is not too badly damaged, and, as he sells the furs, he chose the .17 Rem.

fieldwanderer
Funnily enough, I've been considering getting one too - what's barrel life like with them?
fortune
I've got an open slot for one that I need to decide on ., as my ticket is up for renewal later in the year but I am a bit tight on storage room. They are touchy about charge level and bullet type but it is a superb cal that is used a lot in Aus and some states for coyote to save the fur. they seem to drop stuff on the spot. Underdog
Barrel life is good if you don't empty the mag to quick. Thick barrel absorbs heat well.
fizzbangwhallop
Mine's definitely a keeper.... it's the rifle that's been out of the cabinet the most in the time I've owned it, so much that the other rifles have reported me. A joy to shoot and, as and when the barrel ever wears out it'll have another straight on there. Fizz
