fenboy
One of my farmers told be he had been seeing a lot of pigeons on some peas that are going to have to be cultivated in. I had a look about 10 am and there was not a bird to be seen , I though they may put in a appearance this afternoon , so popped back about 2pm . There was now the odd bird moving about but nothing like I was hoping . I decided to give it a few hours anyway , with the crop not being harvested I had the bonus of being able to drive over it to where I planned to set up , which makes a nice change ! I was soon set up with my usual 15 decoys and the magnet and did not have to wait too long to get the first few in the bag . I would normally add the dead birds to the pattern but with so many flies about I opted to bring them in as they were shot and put them in trays inside a carp sack , these birds are going for BOP food and at 80p each I thought I better look after them. After a reasonable start things became quite slow but there was enough to keep me interested for a while , there was not big numbers and I never even had chance of a double , the day ended with 55 and a suicidal rabbit in the bag. Whitebridges
I've not everyday you hear of a pigeon shooter on a darn good earner. Go for the double ton next time. They are cutting as bit of barley around here.
marsh man
At this rate fenboy you will soon be included in mottys list of successful pigeon shooters who use a magnet A very nice bag on dry peas on what has been a hot day , unlike yesterday when I had a look round in low cloud and drizzle . up until a week or so ago the fields of seed peas I go on had enough on there to shoot once every week to 10 days , now they are completely free from pigeons , not because I have shot them all , far from it but the fields are surrounded with wheat and barley fields and there are a few on most of them, dropping in the tram lines and sitting on the telegraph wires. like I say a few on each but not enough to lug your gear from one end of the field to the other end . Still no signs of any combines started yet , but I would have thought by the weekend we will see the first field cut as there in the farm all ready to make a start . Cosd
Well done FB How is a carp bag different to a fine mesh decoy bag which I use to keep the flys off?
marsh man
Yes 3 boxes have yielded over £40 , I can live with that ! Hi fenboy ..... Is this the first time you have used steel shot for pigeons ? And how do you find them in comparison to lead . ? And lastly what size shot and grms do you use , and at what price do they retail at .? Konnie
if your making a few £ have you thought of giving the farmer a few £ to flail mow some of the field, if your the first in the area you will have the time of your life, if they are going to waste. I have only switched to steel this last couple of weeks , I am using Eley VIP steel 32 grams of 5 shot , just standard steel not HP stuff . Its pretty good but I have kept the range to 40 yards or less , same as any cartridge put the shot in the right place then it will do the job, they cost around £5.75 a box at my local. If I do not have any orders for the BOP boys then I will still be using lead though as it will give me a bit more range.

Yes I am sure I would have had the time of my life a whole field of dry peas shelling everywhere and the farmer having no interest in keeping the pigeon off !!! Unfortunately the only reason the peas are not going to be combined dry ( they should have been vined but were to far gone ) is that the farmer has signed a contract giving the land over for veg to be grown next on it , The veg company want to have it planted before the peas would have been ready , the field is being cultivated tomorrow My only hope is plenty of peas find themselves on the surface between the veg . I wouldn't have thought there would be much point at the moment, first in the area or not. The pigeons are far too wrapped up in the wheat and barley at the moment. Motty is right, they are concentrating on the Wheat at the moment which is more softer than the winter barleys . I did manage to get 20 odd this afternoon on the edge of a game cover strip which border a wheat field , one little interesting thing was , out of the 24 picked I never had one young one today , and it looked like most of yours fenboy were old ones as well . I had no young ones either , I don't really expect too many young birds this time of year , come late August through september they often make up 90% of the bag.
