JDog
Well not quite a beginner but I haven't fished for coarse fish for forty four years and with the introduction of all of these fancy baits and tackle I might as well be. Less than 3km from my home on the top of the Wolds there is a perfect little haven of tranquillity hidden away in a freakish fold of the Wolds hidden from view of any road nearby. In the valley there is a series of man made ponds served from a very strong spring. Pigeons, geese, mallard and hares abound. I met the owner recently when I called in to ask him if I could shoot his pigeons. He said I could, and was I interested in fishing his ponds? So today I splashed out £18 on new line and hooks, looked out my old rod purchased for stalking trout in New Zealand and Lady JDog and I set off this wet evening with a picnic and bread for bait. What a lovely place even in the rain. Bounder the border sat patiently whilst I fished, Jasper could not believe that I could continually throw things into the water and not ask him to retrieve them and he quivered with excitement for two hours. Just on dark and just as I was about to pack up I had a bite and struck into a decent fish. Lady JDog thought I had hooked the bottom. After a fight lasting fifteen to twenty minutes (I was using 4lbs breaking strain line) I landed this carp in my old trout net even though the thing was really too big to fit in it. I may be hooked on this fishing lark.

SNS
That's a fair old bend in the rod. Similar to the bend in the carp you must have managed in order to fit it in your net ! Well done sir. Though that one stevyg posted earlier in the summer looked bigger.......

pigeon controller
Well done JDog , you've found another avenue to use your preditary instincts. Richard Walker and Mr Crabtree started my carp exploits back in the 60s which I still enjoy today. I'm glad that you've found your little local haven along with the pigeons, your move to the wolds was brave, giving up your productive permissions. I have no doubt that you will develop your network through reputation and determination and look forward to many posts of your exploits. JDog
Not a bad fish at all JDog . I may still need to talk to you. I read the thread about barbel fishing and your post was very detailed and technical and beyond my comprehension. It may be of some interest but I caught barbel in the Severn soon after their reintroduction in the sixties. None weighed more than two or three ounces. Penelope
Ah, the Angling Times babies, incidentally from Kennet stock. Yes, by all means, although I'll be away from 2nd Sept. in Majorca until the 9th. I may still need to talk to you. JDog
Nice one Jdog, that fishing lark is ok but.....you can't beat pigeon shooting .. And Sns was correct..mine was twice the size of yours I agree with the first sentiment. As for the second it is universally acknowledged that yours is, or was, twice the size of mine. However for the life of me I cannot recall a thread in which a story about a fishing adventure of yours came up.
