welshwarrior
I thinking about going back old school with my rifles and changing from my custom/semi custom built Remi 700s to a custome built classic Mauser stalking rifle! Rigby inspired walnut stock light barreled 308 simple German scope. Part of me thinks I must be nut going back around 60 years in technology part me thinks be different. sishyplops
you must be of a certain age Daf i think when you have access to or have had most (within reason) modern guns you do tend to hanker after simpler more user involved than the off the shelf computer built things, i don't think its because we want a challenge necessarily but that we enjoy something more than the clinical excellence that comes with modern machines, i love my old beretta 302/3 autos and remi 1187 and at least I can blame it on them when i shoot Cr**
MrDaveO84
Go for it mate....a simple classic rifle with a Mauser action is a thing of beauty in my eyes. I was looking for a modern .308 for target and boar but as I was looking around the shops I found a 1975 rigby in a walnut sporter stock and I think a zastava Mauser action, Apel mounts and an old s&b 8x56. The stock is a bit tatty and needs some work doing on it but I absolutely fell in love with it. If I can work out how to post pictures I'll put some up
Underdog
Go for it, classical always beats modern. You'll be burning black powder soon too mwahahahar :-) I hanker a Springfield trap door in 45/70 or a short sported falling block, other than a River! Scully
I think it's more a case of getting back to basics and the appreciation of what a 'proper' rifle ( in the eyes of some ) should be like. I know that what I need for all practical intents and purposes is a synthetic stocked bolt action box magazined rifle, so that is what I have, but what I would like is really a single shot falling block (preferably a Farquharsen) or something along the lines of a percussion Creedmore target rifle. I think you've made a good choice.
Harnser
My very first buck was taken with an old SMLE sportarised .303 with open sights . I still think of this first solo stalk after 50 odd years . I would love to take that wonderful old rifle out again . I still think my eye sight is good enough to take a buck out to 100 yards with open sights . I can but only dream . Harnser
malkiserow
I shoot some "old" technology in a 1972 Mauser action PH, it shoots a dream. The floorplate does unlock to aid removal of unused cartridges which helps. I really like it. Do whatever floats your boat. I guess you will do this and you will soon show us some wonderful old rifle with a very nice piece of walnut on it.

Just finish my 375 Mauser first then I'll look at the bits boxes. Got an action I think and a match grade 30 cal barrel so 308 it'll be hopeful have a walnut blank somewhere. demonwolf444
Can see the appeal; gone back to plain old iron sights on an air rifle ( not the same i know ) but there seemed something a bit too easy about picking up the pcp with a scope on it and pretty much never missing unless it was me being stupid. Iron sights on an air rifle have the similar pull for me as a muzzle loader for shotgun shooting just something a bit more primitive about it; lighter gun, cleaner lines... welshwarrior
It will be a long action but to be honest it doesn't bother me that much. My other thoughts are if it mirrors my 375 it will breed familiarity which much must be a good thing.
figgy
I don't think your going backwards. Some very good shots were fired from guns years ago. It's only a steel tube with rifling, a tuned load and it's as good as it gets.

Underdog
Have hunted regularly on opens but need a lonnng barrel now so the front stays sharp due to having long sight. My leverguns went as they were to short. Hunting on opens teaches great restraint and patience. It is also very rewarding and the rifle a joy to carry. It is hard at first, coming off a scope. We are use to all the detail in a scoped image. Then we are use to dissecting our target, to suddenly be faced with just aiming at a blob it seems hopeless but with persistence ones imagination aids the minds eye on the taget and good shots can be made all the same. welshwarrior
I will certainly have a scope on the rifle, but I'll probably fit iron sights as well, it will also be threaded for a moderator with an invisible thread protector as well. Will I use the iron sights not day to day but it's always a useful practise and back up if the scope does go tits up.
