Tomo-1
Hi. I have decided to take the plunge and get myself a 3 shot semi-auto for the marsh. We get mostly duck with the odd chance of a goose. What choke should I fit? I am an OK shot and will be using steel, I do not shoot at very long range birds . I know there is not a one size fits all answer, just a compromise will do. Thanks.
fenboy
I use a Briley light full for everything .
scolopax
I use whatever it came fitted with. Unless you specialise in long range geese then best to forget about after market chokes and concentrate on pointing the gun in the right direction. BTW my gun came fitted with modified. Guest cookoff013
I use full for everything. With steel I use 1/4 or cyl for big stuff.

silver pigeon 3
Kicks modified for me. Bought after a good deal of pattern testing and thinking! Very pleased with it out to 50 yards.
motty
+1 You surprise me, Steve. I would have thought you go for a good deal more choke than that. Personally, for ducks I use 1/2-3/4. For geese I use full or extra full.
hatsanmad
Chokes stick with what you are comfartable with. In mine i use half choke all the time. Dont bother with the others. But you may prefer quarter or skeet choke. All down to personnal choice and which choke gives you consistent patterns.

kent
Kicks modified for me. Bought after a good deal of pattern testing and thinking! Very pleased with it out to 50 yards. Like me in fact the modified will outpatten the velocity required so any more in this case is less! Perhaps if someone shot ridiculously over size shot in a small count tighter might achieve something but 35- 40 is max range for mostly all our quarry with a 12 bore and factory steel Dead in the air kills being the goal not bringing birds down
nic
as i understand it, don't forget that steel patterns tighter than lead

I would put 20 yards on that with the right combination.

The answer to your question isYES if your a responsible wildfowler, the less experience newer wildfowler might consider taking long range shots and will end up wounding more birds than killing them, the best place for that kind of shooter is not on the marsh.Remember you should be responsible at all times you never know who's watching. Happy hunting.

If your new fowler is that inexperienced at shooting he will still wound plenty at any range. You should not be taking him out if you are not sure he is a good shot .
