Cheap Shotguns

Went to the gun shop with my regular shooting pal. And we brought another one of our friends along that is looking to get into shooting. He was interested in a shotgun and asked what price shotguns can be bought new. Dealer said no cheaper than £400 or £500 usually. He is as me and my mate call a "Towny" so isn't used with being kicked by a shotgun and isn't a big fan of it. He fancied a Side by Side so he got a shot with my Grandas and was a bit put off as it's old and kicks like a donkey. Maybe thinking a semi-auto would be better for recoil for him? Only cheap semi-auto i can think off is Hatsan Escourt. Not even sure of the price on it. Is there any others? Any advice for him?

Depends to some extent on what it's to be used for. If it's going to be dragged through the undergrowth and dropped in the mud etc, then a synthetic Hatsan or similar sounds okay, but for clays I'd reckon a used Beretta semi would make more sense.

Semis can still kick though - just not as sharply as an O/U. With either it will take some time for a novice to get used to the reaction of firing the gun.

We are back on the topic of gun fit and what price to pay. It could be kicking like a mule because it does not fit.

There have been a few topics on this over the last couple of weeks.

BINGO!

Sort out the fit and the mount and it shouldn't kick you about!

After what I saw a few months ago, it could be the shells.

Guys shooting clays. Shells seem punchy.

Guys being pushed around, bit of a handful really.

One guy is frail.

I pick up the empties after I finish.

36g at 1450fps !

hello, not having used a shotty for years singles/S/S/O/U, i decided on a semi auto for vermin on the farm and looked at a few makes for weight/ build quality/ ease of use/ price/ etc and after chatting to the team at highland outdoors they said they use an oldy 612 from the office if pigeon shooting and done 1,000s of carts with no probs just a clean, so i chose the camo phenoma

Mainly to be used for some field shooting. O/U always nicer for clays but he doesn't have the money for two so would be used the odd time for clays. But usually just relations and friends with a sit-on clay trap so don't need to worry about the club rules with semi-auto. Probably will get used to the recoil after a couple days at clay pigeons. Thanks for the help.! :good:

hello, yes but if the stock is a bit short get a stretch on rubber butt pad, one like this was my first S/S birmingham made 12 guage and being a nooby got a kick or 2 until i read up on gun fit etc, once the pad was fitted no more probs and was a joy to shoot. it was getting on a bit and a few pits but in proof so i changed for a new AYA.

There is a point to consider when talking recoil reaction .

I have to test fire a lot of guns and it is well accepted that you tend to seemingly get a lot more punishment shooting 10 or so cartridges over field than you do shooting 25 at actual targets .

You also tend to shot flatter than when shooting at a bird .

Next week I have to help sight in a 9.3mm double rifle and that will kick and you know it so every shot is taken with trepidation yet when shooting Boar the owner says he hardly notices it .
