A few on a flight line.

This may be a feeble effort but I did want to put something on the forum lest PC feels that he is the only one contributing in the pigeon shooting section.

Today was the perfect pigeon shooting day, pigeons permitting. The weather was dry with an overcast sky and a decent wind. The first two places I looked at had no pigeons on, the third had 300 on but they disappeared on my approach never to return and the fourth looked promising for fifteen minutes and no more. The fifth was a long belt of dilapidated hardwood trees with two rape fields two fields away. Sometimes the feeding fields are too close to a likely ambush position but this looked about right.

My equipment consisted of gun, cartridges, secateurs and a net....... and a dog. The wind howled at the windward side of the wood but it was very calm on the leeward side which was where I made the rudimentary hide - simply the net strung between two elder bushes. I was in position by 11:30 and up to 12:30 I had picked five pigeons. At that time someone set up to decoy possibly four fields away up wind and I saw a good many birds coming my way after they started to shoot.

Yes I know I always say that pigeons on a wind are difficult. This is in an attempt to gloss over my own inadequacies, but these were difficult, coming from out of the wind into the shelter of the strip of woodland I was in. Somehow I managed to fumble down 28 pigeons in the two hour session and between Jasper and I we picked 25. Tall wet rape is not conducive for ideal scenting conditions.

Well done JDog a good effort for flighting and as you say its nice to see someone other than PC contributing .

I have shot fewer pigeon than any year I can remember this season as it seems to come very much secondary to wildfowling these days .

I will have some game covers to have a look at after the seasons finished , one that will be left for a while as the winner of my day at the charity raffle will hopefully be joining me , hopefully the birds will be present so a decent days sport is had , but with pigeons who knows !!
