magman
Is there any advantage to have these fitted , after a quick google search i think i will cancel them . Any thoughts on them
felly100
They make meter reading a piece of cake. We've got one and it's never done me any harm!
paul1966
we have them, you can forget about giving meter readings to start with, also with ours we can check electricity and gas usage live, the downside is i am now always going round switching off lights. felly100
British gas fitted them, then we switched supplier. There was no drama,we have to send readings now. +1 with the light turning off.
oowee
At some point with smart grid we will all have them and be billed at different rates at different times of the day. Interesting to seeing your own consumption. I heard that old meters wear in your favour?
wascal
Why do they want to fit them ? supposedly so the consumer knows how much they are using , The energy companies save a shed load of wages but I don't think the average consumer will get a penny off their bill I already have a monitor the lecky used and solar generated so I don't need one more. klatuveradanikto
Don't want one ain't getting one. There's a big movement in America raising concerns about these devices constantly emitting micro waves, kinda like having a mobile phone attached to your ear constantly. The jurys out as regards long term affects but as far as i'm concerned unless they make it law i'm not getting one. Fabhui
We ended up getting one about a month or so ago (something the wife sorted out) anyway, I ended up unplugging it and shoving it in the cupboard as it's not nice sitting there watching your money ticking away on the thing! secretagentmole
What has not been addressed is the woeful security that is used on the meters. It is possible to remotely monitor the electricity being used, when it is lower, it signifies the house is unoccupied and burglaries are less likely to be detected. It is possible to remotely shut off the electrical supply, so a hacker can turn your lights off! You do not have to have one, so we are not! Del T
We've had a few problems where the gas meters have locked up and turned the gas supply off to some customers houses.

B725
You will all end up with them as they are to be fitted across the UK in the next five years.

Come on really? In this case a meter that reads itself saving me doing it monthly or a reader coming round twice a year. The paranoid really need some important things to worry about these just save time and effort. If ours got "hacked" they would see we turned things off at night they would never use it as a way of seeing if we were out as the car on the drive is a bigger give away. As for remotely turning it off that sounds like a good idea were there to be any problems in the area
Twistedsanity
I would still be checking the meter readings against their bills and online "live" system to make sure it was working correctly and not overcharging me, so I may as well just continue sending my readings online anyway

VicW
Do a search on 'Smart Meter Security' and you will see that there are serious concerns about the security of your personal information being hacked. Smart meters use the mobile phone network to transmit information. The public are paying for the installations via their utilities bills not the government. As I understand it smart meters will not be compulsory and in any case I can't see the utility companies getting the legal right to enter your property to fit them. Vic. AVB
Does anybody have the 'Hive' active heating management system? If so how is it working out?
kent
I wanted one and asked for one at a scheduled meter change My mobile reception wasn't good enough though here I have a second meter in my workshop I think the knowing how much I am using makes me more aware of switching stuff off When it's not in use
Chris Bb
If it means that I'll get a mobile signal in my house for all these things locally then all well and good. I'll still refuse the meter!

Luckyshot
These meters make no difference to anything so I can't see why everyone is complaining about them. Some people just like something to complain about to keep them happy.
