walt1980
So plod get a fair bit of stick about waiting times etc, but Suffolk plod have come good for me this week. Tuesday posted variation in, Wednesday get a phone call saying where's your cheque? Thursday deliver payment (oops!) Saturday new license drops on door mat! Can't complain about that for service, fair play to the Suffolk lot for being quick, never had to wait more than 2 weeks for anything! walt1980
.22 hornet. It came back so quick the new rifle hasn't arrived yet!!! It's Christmas when I was a kid all over again, new toy and no batteries!!!
mick miller
You shouldn't have to pay for a variation, only if you have to add a calibre or moderator. No wonder it's quick there
Dougy
I did similar, got my ticket back with my variation that I asked for, and exactly worded as I asked too, ;-),, but forgot to add any ammunition. Quick phone call to FAD and popped in envelope. All sent off again Saturday so should be back this week. scutt
Northumbria charge £20 for variation even 1 for 1.unless you combine it with licence re newel.
walt1980
I had .22lr taken off and .22 hornet put on but it's only done free if you do it with 7 days of disposal of old calibre, .22lr went over a year ago. To be fair I didn't mind £20, especially with the speed they did it in!
mick miller
Wow, it seems that there is no consistency on charges either. One for one (variation) here is free, 7 days or no.

walt1980
To be fair, if someone's gotta sit there and sort paperwork and reprint a licence I can't see a problem if you have to pay a fee. nothing comes free!
steve_b_wales
Sure, it's no problem, I made something else for one of the guys on here recently. To be fair, if someone's gotta sit there and sort paperwork and reprint a licence I can't see a problem if you have to pay a fee. nothing comes free! They are already getting paid to do that. It's part of their job.

scutt
Let BASC know ok had another look at the forces price list = one for one £20. but on the licence details they explain that if the one for one is completed in a reasonable time the fee will be waived .going to give the a bell on monday to get them to explain it to me as it could be me being thick
walt1980
Would just new applications and renewals generate enough income to pay for the services people want? Most people are saying getting land cleared and renewals etc are really slow, maybe they're under staffed? Would people pay more if the service was faster with more staff? Would just new applications and renewals generate enough income to pay for the services people want? Most people are saying getting land cleared and renewals etc are really slow, maybe they're under staffed? Would people pay more if the service was faster with more staff? We are paying more, ( or will be shortly ) but for the same carp service. Paying more doesn't mean they'll be recruiting more staff; we pay more because the licensing authority (or police) say what we are paying now doesn't cover the cost of processing, and it still wont with twice the staff. It costs the same to process an application whether the number of staff is 10 or 20; doubling the number of staff would possibly speed up the process but doesn't halve the cost. Cutting costs doesn't entail recruiting more staff (which would only generate a higher cost in wages) it means providing the same level of service ( in this case ****!) but with reduced staff. walt1980
Read on another forum about how a guy from another country in Europe has had to do a theory test, safe handling test, compulsory tuition course, and then he can apply for a licence! To be fair having a sgc or firearms licence isn't silly money over here and could be a lot worse.yes I get prices have gone up, but it's not that they are just picking on gun licences, they just haven't gone up for a long time and need to catch up with inflation. I think it was about 8 years ago I got my sgc, £50 I think, anyone know when it went up to £50?

They also have handguns in Europe and a very long tradition of hunting; we have neither in this country so I', not sure what point you're trying to make. The entire purpose of the licensing process in this country, including the cost, is of no benefit to the applicant, it is entirely for the benefit of the safety of the general public. Licensing of the person instead of licensing of the object would be much simpler and would incur much less paperwork and therefore cost. It is what we currently do with SGC holders, and I'm unaware of any problems it has or does, pose. There is a one off cost of a driving license, for the sake of the safety of yourself but more importantly the safety of the general public. That license is for life, unless you are deemed unfit to possess it. Your local GP can inform licensing if for any reason you become unfit to possess it. It's not rocket science and it's not perfect, but is anything? It could be so much simpler and cheaper without being detrimental to the safety of the general public, but the authorities are terrified to do it.
