JDog
I arrived in the Cotswolds at lunchtime and drove around some of my old territory. There were lots of pigeons on the rape and tomorrow was an exciting prospect. Less than an hour in the pub, look out of the window and three inches of snow. We hardly made it back to base. My day with Lloydi tomorrow may have to be delayed.

Alpha Mule
On the other side of the coin: I was expecting rain this morning, but when I let our old greyhound out for a pee just after 5, I noticed it was a smashing morning, the kit came out quick style. The mutts are on for rabbit dinner tonight.
oxfordfowler
Never had you down as a fair weather shooter JD . I was out yesterday on some drill only a few miles away from you. They decoyed beautifully ended up with 104. If the gun had not broken I would have had more but could only fire single shots. I had snow/sleet/rain and sunshine. It's your own fault for inviting Lloyd - bloody joana .

My day with Lloydi tomorrow may have to be delayed. Took my wife down to the coach station at 6 am yesterday for a weeks holiday in Scotland with a couple of her friends who she used to work with , the rain was chucking it down and cold with it . Time I read the instructions on how to put the kittle on and what setting the toaster need to be on the sky was beginning to clear and a hour later the sun was out and that's how it was for the rest of the day. I went on some rape that was quite thin in places and what pigeons were about were sitting in the trees and on the telegraph wires as I think the ground was to wet after all the overnight rain , anyhow , after walking them off I decided to give it a go for a couple of hours and sitting in the sun it was quite pleasant , that was until the sun started to drop and then it got a bit on the cold side . I took my young dog to get him used to sitting in the hide and let him watch me picking up and overall he done well , never ran in ( although he had a line on him tied to a branch just in case ) and the only down side was , he started to have a little whine now and again . Things were never that fast and after going 20 minutes without a shot in the afternoon it was time to call it a day , picking up 22 I was well satisfied , all I had to do now was get home and work out how to put the oven on and how to feed the dogs

Lets hope it gets a bit warmer next week, I just need a few more birds to fill the last freezer then its off to the game dealers. Talking of snow, I once sat through an enormous snow storm while out with friends hare coursing on the Scottish grouse moors, We saw it coming from miles away, The guide who worked for the earl of moray just got us all to huddle in a tight group with all the dogs in the centre, We had a right laugh and by the time it passed over we were sitting in 2 foot drifts all around us, but we just got up brushed away the snow lying on our dogs and carried on coursing, those were the days, 3 days solid coursing with the Saluki club of GB and the Scottish Deer-hound club, At the time ( mid 1970's ) the keepers used to rely on us to weed out all the weak and diseased hares which improved the quality of the remaining population. It was great then as I was only in my 30's but these days, in my late 60's I run for the thermostat when I feel a cold draught, pity we cant get someone to tow the British isles a few hundred miles south, perhaps anchor it off the coast of Portugal, Edited March 5, 2016 by lakeside1000
fortune
pity we cant get someone to tow the British isles a few hundred miles south, perhaps anchor it off the coast of Portugal, we need to go further south down to the canaries with the ability to be towed further north when it gets hotter.. it isn't very warm 9c down off Portugal. 24c in Gran canaria. When we were out in Menorca a couple of years ago there were rakes of pigeons coming down onto the lawns coming and going all day. they were so tame that if you had a hide out in one of the nearby fields, a single barrel 410 would have yielded a fair bag. sometimes there were twenty to thirty pigeons on the lawns and that was when people were out there. the pigeons might take off and land on the hedge or do a circuit and come back onto the lawns if someone went near them or to get a chair ect. Yea I know what you mean Alan , the cleaners and the home help ( who have just left ) said I have done well after one day, but I am showing early signs of malnutrition and in desperate need of some fresh air, so I am now going in the wood for a hour and get some fish and chips on the way home
JDog
We had a bad start today. Lloydi was late and the three inches of snow was still here. However it all came good in the end and I am sure that when he has paid his penance to his wife for being out shooting and not taking his daughter to ballet classes he will put something on the forum. Glad you managed to beat the conditions , I had a ride around today my rape was devoid of pigeon . I saw lots on game cover in four different locations sadly none of which will allow me access to them , quite a few spread out on various wheat fields too , looking for beet chippings from the previous crop I expect.
