What I find nauseating in situations like this (the JC example I mean) is the hand-wringing non-apologies that use terms like 'error of judgement' and of course the common 'Homer Simpson defence' - along the lines that they are sorry, sorry that they got caught.

As has been said though, the money trickles in anyway. Pay less income tax + have more money to spend on stuff = pay more VAT as a consumer.

Why on earth any sane person would seek to pay more income tax than they need to is beyond me. I'm self-employed, and whilst I don't use 'schemes' I certainly don't pay more than I have to.

Cameron is finished anyway, both by his own design / previous announcements and the way the EU vote is going to go.

But give me him over Blair any day of the week.

Yep I dare say Cameron is better than some and worse than others..........for example Bliar! I personally think Cameron has been a positive with regard to shooting.........lets hope the next incumbent of this office is Tory and pro shooting, because if the rabid anti shooting Labour Party get in............we are pretty much ****ed

There are many, many legal tax efficient vehicles available to all UK taxpayers. Be they accounts in the Chanel Islands or the BVI, unit trusts or tax free purchases for travelers. Whilst such vehicles remain legal, only a fool would not take advantage of them.

I do wonder how many of the self righteous who have bought items "duty free" whilst holidaying abroad will now feel obliged to send HMRC a cheque, after all, is this not a scheme that is morally unacceptable.

Don't think there is any saving to be made in the duty free shop now didn't they close that loophole some time ago! Lol

SNS - you seem to have missed the point. I don't need you to spell out the facts. If you think David Cameron was wise going after Jimmy Carr, your judgement is suspect.

You can point out, until you are blue in the face, the difference between the schemes - it matters not. It was a political PR disaster.

He publishes his Tax returns and shows us he has avoided 75k or so of inheritance tax? Wonder if he read it first!!

He hasn't avoided any inheritance tax. He isn't dead yet. His father and then his mother did by doing what any sensible person would do in respect of tax planning.

Do you actually understand any of this or just jump on popular opinion ?

His mother gave him some money. If she lives for 7 years after that then no inheritance tax is due on that money when she dies.

You too can do the same 'avoidance' give some of your estate away whilst alive, survive 7 years and hey presto.

It can hardly be tax avoidance as no tax is ever due (providing she doesn't die in that time)

I have to say I'm struggling with this PR disaster but (but then I'm not a PR professional nor a politician). This Govt heads done more than any in my career to clamp down on tax avoidance. It's not just talk, they actually take action. What Jimmy Carr did was legal, but reprehensible to many on here and the wider public (but not me). DC was entirely consistent with his Govts stance, and the popular opinion of very many people in this Country in saying he didn't like what JC had done.

If the PR disaster is that too many people in the general population are too dumb, or too entrenched in their views to understand the difference between JCs planning and DC doing no planning at all, then I truly fear for this Country

It's called tax planning and saved my wife and sis-in-law 80k in total. HMRC queried it, tried it on anyway and lost.

There is nothing wrong with what he did, what don't you like about it?

Same thing with my mother-in-law and the 80k, sliding scale as she didn't quite live the 7 years. HMRC took a lot more than they should have because she wasn't sure if she was going to need full time care ( she had MS) so parts of her estate had not been subject to tax planning.

This thread goes round in circles.

Sorry but he can't take the moral high ground like he did with Jimmy Carr whilst engaging in or benefiting from tax avoiding activity like his parents. The rich make the laws for the benefit of themselves which is why loop holes are left open, average Joe on PAYE has no chance to benefit. Some on here seem to love him for some obscure reason but this reflects very badly on him.

Where on his tax return does it allude to avoiding £75k inheritance tax? In fact the only thing that jumps out to me is that it looks like he didn't take his personal allowance.

I think that the popular opinion of very many people in this Country is that they don't like what DC has done.

The PR disaster is that too many people in the general population are "too dumb, or too entrenched in their views" to understand the subtle difference - neither broke the law. Those who can't see what all the fuss is about must have been stunned when DC apologised. With that type of limited thinking, I truly fear for this Country

And my stupid mother in law wouldn't listen, now she's gone in to full time care. Still, it's her money / estate to give to the government if she wants.

I think you will find the popular opinion of the many people who PAYE are sick to the back teeth of being taxed to death at source whilst the rich use whatever means needed to avoid tax legal or not including their own PM. You are right we are bloody stupid for putting up with it.

Some say he has an ISA, the tax avoiding, two-faced, elite tory toff, just like the rest of them, making up the laws hand in hand with Facebook and Costa Coffee, bet he's used pension tax relief at some point as well, the posh-boy champagne swilling tory toff making laws for the benefit of him and his ilk, not for the average socialist-worker banner waving comrade who are just like the rest of this divided nation. This latest tax planning scandal by the eton-mess capitalist tory toff is no different to the double-Irish Dutch-sandwich arrangement used by large corporations, exactly the same sort of thing and the same as all of those sports, arts and media types with their hyper-complex cynical aggressive tax avoidance schemes.

 Our shop steward was staunch anti Tory but it didn't stop him rushing out to buy his council house at a much reduced rate, and I have just cashed in an ISA and have secured a tax free lump sum from my pension with which to pay off my mortgage! Don't you just hate the tories.
