Stubble Groundhog Day

Recommended Posts

Thursday saw me shooting some corvids as requested, I managed 28 before they decided to move to another farm. During my drive home I took the oportunity to look for pigeons and found the first rape stubble on any of our farms. This had a good number of birds feeding hard so I contacted the farmer and booked the field for Friday.

I Picked DB up and told him of my findings of the day before so we were full of hope as we arrived at the field to find no birds down, now this farmer has a liking for big boys toys ie rockets. So I phoned him to see if they had been spooked and he assured me they had not. So we went to the local cafe for DB to get his bacon fix and drove back to watch the field. Its a difficult field to shoot with a road running the length of it on one side and to shoot safely you had to shoot with the wind in your face. We decided to set up under an oak in the field with just twelve on spikes as we had observed a flightline running over the standing rape, we had a few birds come to the pattern but only thirty percent of those flighting so we added some angels and it improved we then added the magnet and they all came to us. We had set up at approx 11.30 and intended to shoot till 18.00 but at 17.00 we had a terrible thunder storm which soaked all of the gear , we managed to put a brolly over the two carp sacks containing the shot birds. We just walked all the gear to the Disco and legged it . When I decanted the birds onto the garage floor to cool we had shot two hundred and forty eight , which was a massive result.

Saturday morning started out with DB at 10.00 expecting to find more cut rape after seventy miles we had found two fields worth shooting. The first was a cut rape wich had been subsoiled but the birds were hitting it hard, I phoned the farmer and he said some one was going to shoot it today he thought, we decide to drive down the field to get a closer look and when we approached the far end could see three bouncer frames in the field with no birds on them , we then noticed the hide all set up and on inspection decoys etc inside . So it appeared that the shooter had set up then left so we left also . The next field we found was half cut and had approx two hundred birds on it but next to the field was a barn conversion with a marquee in the garden and as we drove past it had a sign " Welcome to the Wedding" with lots of catering vans in the drive . Now I know that Bunny Blaster attracts the Police Like Flies to Horse Poo but I think we would get our ticket from the farm if we shot it. It was now 14.00 and we decided to go back to the field we shot yesterday which is a big No No but it still had birds down so we set up in the same position as yesterday and started shooting. DB had to leave at 17.30 as it was his daughters birthday so I ran him home and when I came back the farmer had started combining the rest of the rape . I did a quick countup and needed fourteen to get to the ton so hung on and when the combine went round the bottom of the field it sent birds to me. I finished shooting at 19.30 and picked up one hundred and seven birds so over the two days we had shot three hundred and fiftyfive birds off the rape stubble.

This will be my last post for a month as I'm off to Greece for some well earned R&R. Good luck to all the Massive now the stubbles are here.

you certainly wouldn,t expect to shoot 100 birds after shooting nearly 250 the day before on the same field they must of wanted that field big time

well the birds will get a rest for a month have a good trip they will be there when you get back :good:

Thanks Daz, they may around but we have a Butterfly shooter on the farm so he may be busy.

Another weekend of brilliant sport from the boys from the Midlands , knowing the amount of work and time goes into producing a good bag now again I find it amazing how you two can come with the goods week after week and although my hat is not as big as you know who I will take it off to you and your companion .

Enjoy your time off from shooting pigeons and by the way , do your game dealer close up for the same amount of time you are away ? :good:

Thanks, it is hard work at times as the amount of shooters increase but I think the secret is to rest flocks if you can and then maximise the time you shoot by changing the pattern if it goes quiet so no birds pass. We see shooters set up text book fashion but I think if they took the time to walk out and see the pigeons view they would change the set up or the hide. Also take the time to watch pigeons feeding naturally and remember.
