Scully
Forgot to renew vehicle insurance before going away on site, but as it hasn't gone up just decided to let it auto renew. Got home tonight to a letter stating they couldn't withdraw the money and I realised they had my old card details. Phoned up tonight and Got it sorted, and asked for a receipt as I'm self employed. ' No problem' says she, then after a pause says, ' we have you down as employed by such aand such'. Told her I still worked for the same company but had been self employed since being made redundant by same company due to the recession. 'That may affect our policy' says she. ' Why?' asks I. ' I'll just check.' and after doing so told me my premium would be another 51 quid but couldn't tell me why. Quite annoyed and told her so, then told her to cancel it and I would ring round tomorrow and get it cheaper somewhere else. She said she would have to reimburse my account which could take time so I said fine. Was just about to hang up when she asked me if I was entitled to any discount being a repeat customer. No idea says I. She told me to hang on while she did some maths and told me i was indeed entitled to a discount, so my premium would stay as initially quoted! So my discount worked out at 51 quid! What a coincidence! 🤔 Edited August 9, 2016 by Scully

Lloyd90
Did you stay with them then though ? I certainly would still shop around now and see if you can get it cheaper elsewhere. To be honest I'd shop round any ways, brand loyalty is long gone, they don't care about the customers as you've seen.
Scully
I usually do shop around but completely forgot about it until I was away on site and even though it would have been difficult to do so on site was willing to do so due to the 51 quid rise. Will stay with them for now but will leave next renewal. Like I said, if I wasn't on site I would have shopped about.
team tractor
I had a renewal from RAC today at £198 . Really Last year was £146 so I asked them to cancel my policy . She dropped it to £85 For the same break down cover
four-wheel-drive
That is why I always pay for it in one payment every year I used to have it on a DD but every year it would go up so now I when I get my reminder I try a few comparison sites and only renew it if I cannot get it cheaper with another company. She dropped it to £85 For the same break down cover What do you get on your policy for £85? The reason I ask is that I had a renewal quote from RAC for £187, but when I complained about the price, got it reduced to £139. That is for my wife and myself covering two cars. Scully
Its amazing what a threat taking your custom elsewhere will achieve.Indeed. Must admit I was a bit gobsmacked, but when she repeatedly couldn't tell me why it made a difference, except for 'policy' I was miffed. Still quite annoyed that they 'tried it on'. A workmates policy increased some years ago and he was going to change also, until the rep told him he would cancel his policy and reinstate him as a 'new' customer. It worked out cheaper than his initial quote!

I think insurance companies are the exception to the rule that 'loyalty pays'.
keg
Agreed Scully, the are there to make money. The old school of loyalty does not exist in many areas now.
