hedd-wyn
Could anyone please recommend a decent paint/wood stripper for a gun stock? Just bought a lovely AYA Yeoman but would like to bring the stock back to life by removing the chipped lacquer & refinishing the woodwork. I've restored a few stocks in the days when nitromos actually did what it said on the tin. Used some of their recent stuff on some old chairs & ended up in a pile of green gunky mess & a ****** off better half. Thank you
rbrowning2
The old nitromors used to be good but because of the nanny state we now live in the new green tin version has had the old active ingredient changed and it is now in my experience c**p, So look else where. ditchman
has anybody tried that very strong oven cleaner....the stuff which is like slime and you put it in a thick plastic bag...then put the over racks in and seal it and leave for an hour......... wonder if that would be any good........... when we used to refurb cat engines ...we would put the painted parts in a sealed contantainer/bin...that had CCL4 (carbon-tetra-cloride ) and leave it for 4 hours then wet it again......seal it ...and the vapour would melt everything all the paint grease........i think the dry cleaners use the same stuff.... AlistairB
Last time i refurbed a french polished table, i used the Diall Paint Stripper from B&Q, it was far more effective than Nitromors. http://www.diy.com/departments/bq-paint-varnish-remover-1l/262313_BQ.prd AB

Yes I have I posted on it a while ago I used it to strip the wood on an old Browning Auto-5 and it worked very well. I doubt it did the wood any good though as its pretty noxious stuff but the stock and forend haven't fallen apart yet! nagantino
Bit disturbed to hear that Nitromors doesn't work or doesn't work as well as it did. I am also waiting to get at a Yeoman.
iano
Have a little experience in this from boats. Strippers really depend on what is being removed; some strippers would work great on certain finishes while are awful on others. And yes, from what I'm hearing Nitromors were the dogs ******** back in the day but aren't the same now. I've not had much luck with them but the finishes / resins on boats can be very hard to crack. Try posting on a boating forum, explain as best you can what is the finish and you might get some good suggestions.
impala59
Citristrip is tops for me, but order from the US site not UK as is a quarter of the price even with shipping and arrived in a week! it even easily removed the Dupont hard shell lacquer from my 1187 which was chipped badly and was one that I was dreading doing

welshwarrior
There are few trade strippers sold onnEbay that have the formular but be careful seen a few stock badly marked by incorrect use and or the wrong stuff.
nagantino
I remember when I was a painter we used lots of Nitromors to strip the varnish from front doors. Good stuff, just watch yourself when going to the loo. I used it once also to strip Winchester 550. It had a laquer finish. The Nitromors was useless, though on CZ rifles and old Spanish S/S' s it did the job.
Vince Green
I have used the stuff Toolstation sells (blue tin) recently to strip the lacquer off some alloy wheels. It seemed to do the job as well as other paint strippers I have used it the past. Edited January 9, 2017 by Vince Green
