scottie2345
I love hammer guns and I so fancy one for clays, weird i know, but of course everything I see is fixed choke and usually tight at that, I would prefer something more open, I realise I could have them opened up, I have a old beater SxS from wabbitbosher, just fancy something a bit better I have seen the Huglu 201 with multichoke and hammers, and it seems to fit the bill, Thoughts? http://www.shootinguk.co.uk/reviews/shotgun/huglu-201hrz-hammergun Thanks Richard

scottie2345
How much do you want to invest ? The Huglos are about £750, I like the notion of a old english gun, But i would want something nitro proofed, but fairly open chokes 1/4 and 1/4 would be nice, hence I see that with multichoke, as an aside I dont have a problem with Turkish guns as one of my guns is the Armsan A620, flawless bit of kit Richard

Blackpowder
Another recent thread on here did not give one make of Turkish hammer gun a very good review. Still a few good British hammer guns about but the Yanks are very keen on them so be quick. Blackpowder
bruno22rf
English hammer guns are my passion and there's still quite a few around at reasonable prices - about a month back I bought a Lincoln Jefferies SxS Damascus HG in vgc for under £300..The thought of buying a Turkish Delight fills me with dread - why? when you can buy 10 times the gun at half the price ( the English gun will also cost you nothing if you look after it as you should get back what you paid plus a little more) and as for a multi SxS I find the notion abhorrent - akin to a pump action Holland & Holland or a Purdey poachers folding .410. Give your specs a buff up and get searching the ads - you know it makes sense
Westley
I have been searching for a Woodward or Boss pump action, with an extended magazine. I just fancy a go at that Practical Shotgun/Dirty Harry routine !

scottie2345
I can see a english gun is better bet really, but I worry about condition, nitro, and choke, please allay me :-)

kevin55
I can see a english gun is better bet really, but I worry about condition, nitro, and choke, please allay me :-) You want nitro-proofed, lots have open chokes, even TC on the right barrel, you need good wall thicknesses and ideally well in proof and little or no pitting Bill Pink/Historic Guns (Coney Basher on here) is very helpful. I bought a Pollard Hammer gun off him and Gunman here knows of a good gun And there's Diggory Hadoke's book on Hammer Guns I did find on a shoot last Saturday that it helped being able to open my Lang hammer gun with the right hammer cocked K

Plenty of underlevers which allow the gun to be opened with the right hammer cocked. Also, underlevers seem less sought after so are often cheaper. Agreed As a lefty I find the under-lever awkward, though a side-lever is good for me, using my left thumb
scottie2345
The shooting show is coming up, so I shall perhaps have a look there at what is around, maybe I just need to factor in having the chokes opened up. bruno22rf
Digs book "antique guns for the modern shot" is also a Gem of a read. As for chokes - don't get too hung up on it - some of my guns are CYL/ FULL but that doesn't seem to stop them dropping pigeons all day long - many guns for Grouse were built this way. If you did want the chokes altered then £100 should cover both tubes if you simply wanted them opened out. Take a look on Gunstar - few there, you will also be amazed at how a decent Smith will remove pits - I bought a gun with a ploughed field inside the tubes - Douglas Burton left them looking like glass!! Feltwad
For a hammergun go for a original English gun it may be by a London or Birmingham maker I personnal go for the provincial maker which I have restored and reproofed .I have used hammerguns , percussion and flintlocks for the past 67 years I now shoot with a pair of 24 bores and a sxs 32 bore hammerguns which I must confess are of Belgian make Feltwad A Stand of restored 12 bore sxs underlever hammergun Edited January 24, 2017 by Feltwad

Good call, my last SxS came from him :-) I know not to get hung on chokes, but I do, it is a head thing< i mainly shoot clays, so dropping stone dead is not really an issue just break the little blighters :-) Richard Edited January 24, 2017 by scottie2345
